Our geotechnical engineers play a vital role in turning complex ground conditions into safe, sustainable and buildable solutions across a wide range of sectors. Our Ground Engineering team in the Midlands, Wales and West geography brings together geotechnical engineers, contaminated land specialists, geologists and hydrogeologists to support projects across energy, water, transport and the built environment.
From early ground investigation and site characterisation through to design and construction support, our teams combine technical excellence with collaborative problem-solving to deliver resilient outcomes for clients and communities. The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in the delivery of geotechnical engineering work for projects spanning a wide range of markets and locations across our geography and beyond. Our current work includes data centres, road and rail infrastructure, power grid upgrades, flood alleviation schemes, dams and reservoirs, wind power generation, buildings and site development.
You will contribute to technically challenging projects from early site investigation through to design and construction, leading design teams and acting as a key point of contact for clients and construction partners. You will work on some of the most significant infrastructure and development schemes across the region, with excellent opportunities to broaden your experience in project leadership, client management, sustainability-led design and team development.
As a critical member of our project teams, you will bring strong collaboration, clear communication and a practical understanding of client needs. We are looking for people who want to be part of a team that thrives on variety and challenge, enjoys collaborative problem-solving, and is motivated to help deliver our growing portfolio of water, energy, transport and buildings projects.
You are likely to bring:

Strong experience in geotechnical design, including foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, slopes and buried structures, using current industry standards and guidance.

Ability to lead the delivery of desktop studies, plan and interpret ground investigations, develop ground models and manage ground risk effectively.

Experience preparing and applying UK specifications for ground investigations, piling works and earthworks, with a working knowledge of consultancy services and construction contracts.

Confidence using industry-standard geotechnical software for data management, ground modelling, foundation, retaining wall and earthworks design.

A relevant degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology or a related discipline, with professional qualification through the ICE, Geological Society or an equivalent body.

You will bring strong interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative and adaptable working style, and the ability to manage work packages across different projects and locations. You will also be motivated to grow Arup’s ground engineering capability through high-quality technical delivery, knowledge sharing and strong client relationships.
