Fixed term for one year, term time only.
Salary: £30,000 (pro rata)(pay review pending Sept 2026)
Hours: 2 days a week (14 hours)
Location: Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire

We are a small independent Careers company and we work across Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire. We are seeking qualified and enthusiastic Careers Advisors to join our talented and growing team.
We mainly deliver independent and impartial careers information, advice and guidance in Mainstream and Special Schools, as well as supporting children and young people not engaged in employment, education or training (NEET) in a variety of settings, having forged strong links in the heart of local communities.
We seek individuals with passion, who are self-motivated and keen to provide quality services that will make a real difference: whether it is to raise people’s confidence in themselves, or by simply giving accurate and relevant guidance, to improve their training or employment opportunities. In any one day, you could meet students with academic aspirations or those at risk of becoming NEET, so advisors with experience of working in schools with a range of individuals is essential.
To be considered, you must hold a recognised Information Advice and Guidance Qualification, at Level 4 or higher. Applicants interested in working in this area or working towards a Level 4 or 6 Qualification in Advice and Guidance may also be considered for a trainee position.

Careers Advisor Job Description & Person Specification
Job title: Careers Advisor (Part Time) Term time only
Responsible to: Team Leader
Key job purpose
In collaboration with schools, colleges and alternative education providers, to develop and support an integrated and effective careers education programme for their students which results in successful outcomes and enables students to realise their career goals.
To provide services to individuals, including adults, seeking private careers consultations, tailored career guidance and coaching.
Main tasks
1. Careers Education and Guidance
- To develop and deliver a comprehensive and differentiated CEIAG programme, which provides impartial careers education, information, advice and guidance to students and prospective students.
- To deliver independent, impartial 1 to 1 careers guidance to students and provide individual tailored Careers Action Plans.
- To develop and deliver impartial careers education, information, and guidance to private clients.
- To prepare and support students and adults in developing skills that increase employability and progression opportunities after education/training.
- To work proactively with the Team Leader and Advisors to ensure consistent provision of high-quality advice and guidance. This includes undertaking 5 days CPD per year as well as other team development activity.
- To maintain records of interviews and guidance including collating and providing statistics and analysis on effectiveness of provision using the ICT system and database.
- To organise and deliver effective group work for years 8, 9, 10, 11 and post 16 students.
- To maintain a professional knowledge of current job trends, markets and opportunities, higher education, and Government initiatives for all ages.
- To attend parents’ evenings, careers fairs, GCSE and A level results day as necessary.
- To agree travel/venue arrangements in-line with Compass H&S policies and procedures when organising appointments with individuals.
2. Resource development and marketing support
- Working as part of the team, to assist with the development of group activity resources.
- Working as part of the team, to offer workshops and tutorials on relevant employability and progression skills e.g., interviewing, CV writing etc.
- To assist with school’s liaison, promoting Compass Careers service and undertaking marketing activities as required.
3. General
- To ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with Compass Career’s policies and procedures.
- To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested in relation to a post of this nature.

The successful applicant will be required to undertake appropriate safeguarding checks as well as providing proof of right to work in the UK. The person appointed to this post will have day-to-day contact with students, many of whom are under eighteen years of age, and most under sixteen years, a number of whom may have moderate to severe learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The post holder will therefore require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Experience
Excellent interpersonal skills and a Training/Teaching/Assessing/Verifying proven track record of working successfully in teams and off own Adult Guidance initiative.
Experience of delivering careers education activities to individual and groups of young people in schools.
Proven experience in providing one-to- one careers guidance to a range of people of different abilities, needs and ages.
Knowledge
An up-to-date knowledge of current job Knowledge of employment agencies trends, markets and opportunities, and employer networks. higher education and Government initiatives External quality awards, including

Skills and abilities
Flexibility and business savvy, as Marketing and presentation skills contracts with schools can come and go, so being prepared to always market the business, to obtain more work with existing customers and being conscientious about gaining other potential customers.
Good IT skills with a broad knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 suite of programmes including MS Teams and
ZOOM.
Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.
The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, including students and professionals.
The ability to meet targets and deadlines while working accurately, with attention to detail.
Working well as a team player but also able to use own initiative when required and able to be always proactive – especially if based in a school, where advisors can be ‘the forgotten’ member of staff if they do not ‘make their presence felt’. This skill is also important for ‘up-selling’ our services to existing customers (persuading existing customers to buy in extra delivery).
