Do you hold a Level 4 qualification (HNC/HND or industry equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Drainage, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline? Do you have experience in flood risk management, drainage, or civil engineering? Are you motivated by problem-solving and able to confidently prioritise what matters most? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Infrastructure Service, where you will help deliver effective, efficient, and sustainable services for our communities across Wales.

This role is an excellent first step for someone looking to launch their engineering career, offering the chance to turn your qualifications into meaningful, real-world experience. From day one, you’ll be involved in live projects and practical challenges, building your confidence and developing the skills needed for a successful career, with structured support, training, and mentoring from experienced engineers to guide your development every step of the way.

In this role, your work will have real, visible impact across Newport. You’ll contribute to projects that improve infrastructure, support flood resilience, and deliver sustainable drainage solutions that protect homes, businesses, and communities. You’ll also play a part in helping the city respond to the climate emergency, contributing to work that delivers lasting environmental benefits and strengthens resilience for the future—giving you the opportunity to see the tangible results of your work in the places people live and work.

This is a new and exciting position, part-funded by the Welsh Government through the Environmental Engineering Placements Programme, which supports individuals in gaining practical experience, encourages long-term careers in environmental engineering, and helps build the future workforce for this vital sector.

Key Responsibilities

Provide crucial support to the Authority’s statutory functions in the field of Flood and Water Management, with a focus on flood and coastal risk management and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
Contribute to the preparation of grant applications, tenders, and contract documents.
Aid in the design and implementation of highway and drainage improvement schemes.

We are looking for:

A graduate with a Level 4 qualification (HNC/HND or industry equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Drainage, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline, with knowledge of drainage and flood risk management principles
Someone with experience of applying learning through coursework, design projects, dissertations, fieldwork, laboratory work or simulations relevant to flood risk, drainage or infrastructure.
Someone with experience of analysing technical information and working to specifications, standards or guidance as part of structured academic work.
Experience of collaborative working through group projects, presentations, or problem‑solving tasks, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.

The successful applicant will be offered a range of training to upskill in the field of Flood & Coastal Risk Management or mining legacy management. We will provide corporate-related training and mentoring and will allow the successful applicant to attend a range of training (up to 4 courses during the period). The successful candidate will also be offered an opportunity to attend any annual related conferences.
