Overview
Goodmakers is looking for a Furniture Finisher to join our workshop team, working on high-quality, bespoke furniture projects. This role is suited to someone with experience in timber finishing — particularly stains and oil finishes — or a strong foundation with the desire to develop their skills further in a craft-led environment.
You’ll work closely with our cabinet makers on bespoke and small-batch pieces, applying finishes that emphasise the natural character of timber while maintaining consistency and refinement. This is a hands-on role where attention to detail, care, and pride in workmanship are genuinely valued.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparing solid timber and veneered furniture components for finishing to a high standard
- Applying stains and oil finishes (hand-applied and/or sprayed where appropriate) to achieve consistent colour, tone, and depth
- Carrying out sanding and surface preparation on solid timber and veneered panels
- Inspecting finished work, carrying out fine remedial work where required, and signing off pieces for delivery
- Working closely with cabinet makers to ensure finishes complement construction details and design intent
- Handling furniture carefully during finishing, inspection, and movement around the workshop
- Maintaining a clean, organised finishing area and following all health & safety procedures
Skills & Experience (Essential)
- Some experience in furniture finishing or a related role (training and progression supported)
- Experience applying stains and/or oil finishes to timber
- A good eye for colour, surface quality, and consistency
- Careful, methodical approach to work
- Comfortable working on bespoke, high-value furniture
Desirable (but not essential)
- Experience with hardwax oil finishes (e.g. Rubio Monocoat, Osmo, or similar)
- Experience sanding veneered panels and solid timber to a high standard
- Experience working in a cabinet making or joinery environment
- Experience maintaining finishing materials and consumable stock
- Background in bespoke or small-batch furniture production
- Interest in learning specialist finishing techniques as part of a wider craft role
