Caltec Instrument Services Ltd is seeking an experienced and motivated Instrument Calibration Field Engineer to join our team.
This is a predominantly field-based role involving the calibration, verification, adjustment and fault finding of a wide range of industrial, process and laboratory instrumentation at customer sites throughout the UK.
Our customers operate mainly within the food manufacturing sector, including dairy and food processing plants, and the medical and life sciences sectors, including hospitals, laboratories and pharmaceutical facilities.
The position is approximately 90% site-based and 10% office or workshop-based. The role involves frequent travel throughout the UK and regular overnight stays away from home.
A full UK driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle are essential. Business mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with the company’s mileage policy. Hotel accommodation and agreed subsistence expenses will be covered when overnight stays are required.
This role would suit a practical and self-motivated engineer who enjoys varied technical work, problem-solving and working directly with customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out on-site and workshop calibration of a wide range of instruments, including:
- Temperature sensors, probes, indicators and transmitters
- Pressure gauges, switches and transmitters
- Humidity instruments
- Flow meters and flow measurement systems
- Conductivity meters and transmitters
- Weighing scales and balances
- pH instruments
- Data loggers and monitoring systems
- Process controllers, recorders and indicators
- Perform UKAS-accredited and traceable calibrations in accordance with company procedures and customer requirements.
- Set up, verify and test instrumentation using suitable calibration standards and test equipment.
- Carry out adjustments, minor repairs and fault finding where appropriate.
- Interpret wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, technical manuals and instrument specifications.
- Complete calibration certificates, service reports and supporting documentation accurately and clearly.
- Identify instruments that are outside tolerance and communicate findings to customers.
- Work safely and comply with company procedures, customer site rules and health and safety requirements.
- Provide professional technical support and maintain good working relationships with customers.
- Manage travel, site attendance and allocated workloads effectively.
- Assist with office, workshop and administrative duties when not attending customer sites.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Previous experience in instrumentation, calibration, electrical engineering, process engineering, maintenance or a related technical field.
- Practical experience working with industrial or laboratory instruments.
- Good fault-finding and troubleshooting skills.
- A sound understanding of electrical measurement and process instrumentation.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and technical documentation.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively across multiple customer sites.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail, particularly when recording calibration results and completing technical documentation.
- Good customer service skills and a professional approach when working on customer premises.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic reporting systems.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Access to a reliable vehicle suitable for frequent business travel.
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout the UK and stay away from home when required.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Previous experience calibrating temperature, pressure, humidity, flow, conductivity, pH or weighing equipment.
- Knowledge of 4–20 mA analogue loops, including loop testing, signal measurement and transmitter simulation.
- Familiarity with West, Eurotherm or similar process controllers, indicators and recorders.
- Understanding of SCADA systems, PLC-controlled processes and industrial control systems.
- Experience working with temperature-controlled equipment, monitoring systems or process plant.
- Knowledge of the food, dairy, food processing, hospital, pharmaceutical or laboratory sectors.
- Previous experience working in a UKAS-accredited or ISO/IEC 17025 calibration environment.
- Experience using pressure calibrators, temperature baths, dry-block calibrators, electrical process calibrators or other calibration standards.
- Relevant electrical, mechanical, instrumentation or engineering qualification.
Working Requirements
- Approximately 90% of the role will be carried out at customer sites throughout the UK.
- Approximately 10% will involve office, workshop, reporting or administrative duties.
- Frequent travel is an essential part of the role.
- Regular overnight stays away from home will be required.
- Some early starts may be necessary to meet customer production or site access requirements.
- The engineer will use their own vehicle for business travel, with mileage reimbursed in accordance with the company’s mileage policy.
