The Murmur is a brand-new, upmarket independent kitchen opening in the heart of Cardiff — a destination unlike anything else in the city. We're looking for a Head Chef who chases perfection to build and run our kitchen from day one. We're open 7am to 10:30pm, serving from breakfast through to the evening: precision plates, beautiful presentation, real craft across the whole day.
No one else in Cardiff combines what we do — a serious drinks programme (loose-leaf teas, ceremonial matcha, specialty coffee, house smoothies) alongside granola bowls, fresh pastries, salad bowls, inspired plates and more, all held to one standard. We're a destination, not a pit-stop. You'd assist to shape the menu, agree standard and lead the team to it — including a Senior Chef who shares the cover with you.
How the rota works
Full-time, around 40 hours a week on a planned rota with set days off. You and the Senior Chef share early and late shifts across the 7am–10:30pm day, weekends on rotation. We schedule ahead so you can plan your life, and keep shifts straight rather than split wherever we can. It's a full-day operation and we're upfront about that — run properly, not chaotically.
The food (still being developed — you'll help shape it)
- Mornings: granola bowls, fresh pastries, açaí bowls, avocado smash, shakshuka and the like — alongside classics done immaculately: eggs Benedict, a refined Full English, Welsh rarebit on house sourdough.
- Midday: composed salad bowls and a build-your-own bowl concept, signature Asian-inspired plates (teriyaki, Korean BBQ, Thai), and house soups — every plate finished with care.
- Evenings: an evening menu currently in development — your chance to help shape it. Full table service throughout.
Presentation matters as much as flavour here — these are plates people travel for.
You'd be a great fit if you
- Take real pride in precision and presentation — you cook to a standard, every cover
- Have led or are ready to lead a kitchen, with experience in an upmarket kitchen, bistro or brunch spot
- Are confident across breakfast and brunch, and keen to develop the Asian-inspired side (we'll back you while you learn)
- Are strong on prep and organisation — our menu runs on good batch cooking and assembly to order
- Can lead a small team and keep a calm head through service
- Hold a Level 2 food hygiene qualification (we'll fund your Level 3)
Comfort managing food costs and waste is a plus we'll support you on — not a dealbreaker.
