Full job description

Pembroke House is a purpose-built care home for veterans of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in Gillingham. We have been serving Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans and their dependants for over 70 years. Our residents and staff enjoy a varied yet familiar way of life to encourage independence and give each day meaning and purpose. The home has a ‘family-run’ feel and we have carefully created a supportive, friendly and close-knit team, making it a unique and very special place to work.

The Job Role

The Deputy Manager is responsible for leading, managing, and delivering safe, effective, and high-quality person-centred care within the home. As the most senior clinician, the post holder ensures robust clinical leadership, consistent standards of care, and professional supervision of all nursing and care staff.

This role combines hands-on clinical practice with accountability for care standards, regulatory compliance, and continuous quality improvement. The post holder works closely with the Home Manager to ensure the delivery of person-centred care and a culture of professional excellence across all areas of the home.

This role will require the post holder to deputise in the absence of the Home Manager and work closely with our Dementia Services Manager, the three roles forming the key management team for the home.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Provide strong clinical and professional leadership, setting clear strategic direction for all aspects of service delivery, clinical practice, and quality of care.
Ensure full compliance with all relevant legislation, regulatory requirements and professional standards, including CQC regulations, NICE guidance, safeguarding frameworks, and applicable professional codes of practice.
Lead the development, implementation, review, and ongoing monitoring of clinical and care policies and procedures, working collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary leadership team to promote safe, effective, and person-centred care.
Role model clinical excellence through consistently high standards of professional conduct, competence, and practice, maintaining a visible and hands-on presence within the home.
Participate in the on-call and emergency cover rota, as agreed with the Home Manager and Dementia Services Manager, ensuring appropriate clinical leadership and support when required.
Lead and take accountability for internal clinical audits, inspections, quality assurance activities, and reviews, ensuring that identified actions are implemented and monitored to completion.
Provide effective training, coaching, supervision, and ongoing professional development to ensure colleagues have the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to consistently deliver high standards of clinical care.
Support recruitment and workforce planning activities, including recruitment campaigns, candidate interviews, and selection processes, to maintain safe staffing levels and ensure the skills and experience of the team meet residents’ needs.
Undertake hands-on clinical duties where required, setting clear expectations for colleagues and demonstrating best practice in clinical care, techniques, and procedures in accordance with agreed policies and professional standards.
Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), providing leadership and guidance to ensure these requirements are understood and consistently applied in practice.
Lead and maintain oversight of medication management, clinical assessments, and care planning, ensuring each resident’s clinical needs are appropriately identified, documented, reviewed, and adapted as their needs change. Ensure colleagues are appropriately trained, competent, and equipped to deliver the required care safely and effectively.
