Research Scientist QKD Implementation Security

Outline

Toshiba Europe Limited has been at the forefront of quantum communication for over a decade, pioneering technologies that set new standards in cryptography and data security. Our research underpins deployed Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems and continues to drive innovation in nextgeneration quantumsecure networking.

We invite applications for the post of Research Scientist in QKD Implementation Security at the Cambridge Research Laboratory, Toshiba Europe Ltd. This role focuses on the in-depth experimental characterisation and testing of QKD systems and components, developing a deep understanding of real system behaviour, device imperfections, and securityrelevant implementation details. The insights generated through this work directly inform system design, security analysis, and the evolution of deployed and future platforms.

Key Responsibilities

You will play a key role in the experimental characterisation of QKD systems, contributing highquality data and physical insight.

System Characterisation & Testing

Design and carry out experimental tests of QKD transmitters, receivers, and subsystem components.
Characterise photonic and electronic elements such as sources, detectors and modulators.

Implementation Security

Generate experimental evidence that supports security analysis, modelling, and mitigation strategies.
Provide clear, datadriven input to decisions on system architecture and performance tradeoffs.

Collaboration & Contribution

Work closely with experimental and theoretical teams to ensure security assumptions reflect practical implementation details.
Contribute to joint research activities with academic and industrial partners.
Write internal reports, coauthor scientific publications, and present work at conferences.
Contribute to efforts to develop global standards for quantum technologies.

Skills & Experience (Essential)

PhD (or equivalent experience) in Experimental Physics, Photonics, Electronic Engineering, or a related field.
Strong handson experience with experimental photonic systems.
Proven ability to design, execute, and interpret complex measurements.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment.

Desirable Experience

Knowledge of QKD, quantum optics, or quantum communications.
Familiarity with implementation security or assurancedriven testing.
Experimental automation, data analysis, or systemlevel testing experience.
Experience with QKD systems or closely related platforms.
Experience with electronics design (PCB development, FPGA programming, highspeed electronics).
Competence in Python or similar languages; experience with version control (e.g., Git)
