Main Purpose of the Role:
Work with a team of dedicated adults to provide both practical and emotional support to children and young people with emotional, behavioural difficulties and assist in their daily living to help them live as independent and fulfilling lifestyle as possible.
Provide a safe and nurturing environment in which the children and young people can learn, develop and thrive.
Contribute to the homes open and homes ethos and approach of the organisation, ensuring that positive outcomes and high-quality care are delivered to all children and young people in our care according to the home’s statement of purpose and in line with the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015.
Ensure that the safety, well-being and welfare of the children and young people are always at the heart of every decision made.
Main duties and responsibilities:
General
· To work in a small team in order to support and implement the development of the children’s home.
· Ensure that the safeguarding of children and young people living in the home remains paramount and is upheld at all times.
· Ensure that the relevant positive behaviour support strategies and approaches are used at all times when caring for and supporting children and young people.
· Ensure that a safe, caring and homely environment is maintained which will allow and encourage children and young people to develop to their full potential.
· To ensure that the children and young people’s needs are recognised and appropriately met. This includes ensuring that they are free from discrimination within the home and to challenge discrimination from outside the home.
· To treat every child and young person with courtesy, dignity and respect.
· Form and maintain positive relationships with the children and young people.
· Provide appropriate support in all areas of the child or young person’s life as outlined in their plans, including daily living skills, social activities, education, emotional support, money, relationships, health and medication etc.
· Assist and prompt children and young people, as required, with their personal hygiene and care such as dental hygiene, bathing or washing and dressing as detailed within their individualised placement plans.
· Support children and young people to make decisions and choices about their lives, regardless of personal beliefs and values. Advocate for them as and when needed to ensure that their views are heard.
· Support children and young people with attending education, at times supporting within school/college and providing transport if required. There may also be times where education is undertaken within the home, which we also support with.
· When trained and authorised to do so, administer medications in accordance with legal requirements and the policies and procedures of the organisation.
· Undertake the role of keyworker as appropriate taking responsibility for specific children and young people.
· Participate and support the personalised care planning and risk assessment processes ensuring that plans are reviewed and updated as appropriate to reflect changing needs.
· Ensure that handovers are accurately given, ensuring that all necessary documentation is written before the end of the shift and all such documents are read at the commencement of your next shift.
· Ensure that all administrative records and duties are completed to a high standard and completed within timescales set.
· Maintain all areas of the home environment to a high standard including duties such as laundry, household chores and preparing/cooking meals.
· Consistently monitor the environment for any health & safety issues, ensuring that any concerns are raised using the correct procedures and carrying out minor repairs as needed, to maintain safety.
· Support the children and young people with preparing and cooking nutritional and balanced meals.
· In accordance with plans for the day, to organise and supervise recreational and leisure activities both in and out of the home to provide the children and young people with an interesting and stimulating life. This includes being prepared to spend time away from home on holidays and at camps etc.
· To care for children when they are ill and, where necessary, administer medicines, drugs and treatment under the guidance of the child/young person’s medical practitioner.
· To develop and maintain good working relationships with parents, social workers, schools and other professionals concerned with the welfare of the child/young people.
· Promote effective communication between the child/young person, their families and where appropriate external stakeholders by providing safe, confidential and timely information.
· Participate in adult meetings, supervision sessions, training and teaching sessions, both for professional development and to meet the children and young people’s needs.
· Create in conjunction with the other members of the team, a safe and caring atmosphere where independence and growth are supported by a positive environment.
· Maintain accurate and timely records of all activity with children/young people and to share information with colleagues as appropriate to ensure children and young people’s needs are met at all times.
· Work in accordance with the home’s rota ensuring that cover is maintained at all times to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the children and young people.
· To maintain a good understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures.
· Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with the organisation’s Policies and Procedures and the prevailing legislation.
Qualification, Skills & Experience
Essential
· The ability to work on your own initiative and prioritise your workload along with the workload of the team
·· Be flexible in hours of work to effectively support the home
· Good listening and communication skills
· Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures
· Good written skills to complete required documentation
· Full driving License
Desirable
· Experience of working within a children’s setting with people with emotional, behavioural difficulties
. Have the Diploma level 3 in Residential Childcare
. Have good IT skills
