As a BCU Active Group Exercise Instructor, you will inspire and motivate student and staff through the delivery of safe, engaging, and inclusive group exercise classes. You will create a welcoming and energetic environment that encourages participation, supports individual wellbeing, and enhances the overall member experience.
The successful individual would be employed as a casual staff member at Birmingham City University between September 2026 through to May 2027. The candidate would be subject to an end of season review with excellent prospects for continuation thereafter for September 2027.
Main Responsiblities:
· Plan and deliver high-quality group exercise classes in line with BCU Active standards.
· Provide safe, effective, and inclusive instruction suitable for participants of varying fitness levels and abilities.
· Create an enjoyable and motivating atmosphere that encourages regular attendance and member engagement.
· Adapt exercises and offer appropriate progressions and regressions to meet individual participant needs.
· Ensure all classes start and finish on time and are delivered professionally.
· Conduct pre-class safety checks of equipment and the studio environment.
· Ensure all equipment is used safely, cleaned after use, and stored correctly.
· Maintain accurate class attendance records where required.
· Promote BCU Active programmes, events, and wellbeing initiatives to encourage participation.
· Build positive relationships with members and provide excellent customer service before, during, and after classes.
· Follow all health and safety procedures, emergency protocols, and safeguarding policies.
· Keep professional qualifications and instructor certifications current through ongoing professional development.
Essential
· Recognised Group Exercise Instructor qualification relevant to the classes being delivered (e.g. Yoga, Pilates, Boxercise, Dance Fitness, Circuits or Functional Fitness ).
· Current Emergency First Aid at Work qualification (or willingness to obtain).
· Excellent communication and presentation skills.
· Passion for promoting health, fitness, and wellbeing.
· Ability to motivate and engage diverse groups of participants.
· Flexible approach to working, including evenings
· Good understanding of health and safety within a group exercise environment.
Desirable
· Experience delivering group exercise classes within a commercial, leisure, or university setting.
· Qualifications across multiple group exercise disciplines.
· Knowledge of behaviour change and participant motivation techniques.
· Experience working with participants of varying abilities and fitness levels.

Working Hours
This role is based around the delivery of scheduled group exercise classes and may include early mornings and evenings depending on the class timetable.
Pay: £20.00-£35.00 per hour
