We are recruiting for an Audio Visual Technician Apprentice to join our Sound & Video team on a fixed-term, 26 month contract, starting in September 2026
You will learn and apply the skills of an audio visual technician, working in the Sound & Video department whilst studying the Level 5 Audio Visual Technician Apprenticeship Standard in collaboration with Chichester College. You will develop the skills required to provide high quality technical services to productions at Glyndebourne as well as duties required within a busy repertory environment.
An Apprenticeship is an entry level paid employment position where you learn the required skills on the job from our professional team. You will be given 1 day per week to study and/or attend college, either remotely or in person.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities

Develop the necessary practical skills to be able to rig, focus, operate, maintain and troubleshoot sound, lighting, video & communication equipment.

Undertake duties on live performances, rehearsals and changeovers such as operation of sound and video equipment, performing pre-show checks and assisting with scene changes as required.

Learn to prepare and develop accurate show documentation such as risk assessments, show notes and cue sheets.

Develop the skills to provide support to other departments and teams in their requirements of sound, video and communication systems.

To set up and operate events with a multi-skilled approach.

Develop the necessary skills to work co-operatively with colleagues or to work autonomously following a brief.

Assist with the archival recording and delivery process of productions.

Learn to use a variety of equipment, tools and access equipment safely and competently.

Learn to work at height and in hazardous locations safely, using appropriate PPE as required.

Assist in maintaining backstage areas to the highest standard.

Learn to adhere to Health & Safety legislation and understand its application in the live events industry.

Learn about the wider theatre and live events industry, including relevant legislation, unions and industry bodies.

Work within other departments, either at Glyndebourne or with our selected partners, to develop multidisciplinary skills.

Keep up to date with technical and production developments in the live arts industry through independent reading and research.

Attend Chichester College seminars and commit to course study to complete level 5 apprenticeship.

Undertake an end point assessment as part of the level 5 Apprenticeship.

Work closely with your nominated workplace mentor at Glyndebourne who will support the apprentice with completion of their coursework and portfolio.

Undertake any additional training required by Chichester College in the form of functional skills.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
ESSENTIAL
-
An awareness of the entertainment industry.
-
Previous experience working in a technical department in the entertainment, events, broadcasting or recording industries, or significant experience in amateur or community theatre.

Familiarity with a range of sound, video and/or communication systems.
-
A positive self-motivated attitude to learning and to attending college to achieve the required apprenticeship standard.

An ability and willingness to learn new skills.
-
Good communication skills.
-
An enthusiastic, committed and flexible attitude to work, including the ability to work antisocial hours.

Excellent punctuality and good time management.

Experience using Windows and Apple computer systems.
-
Have experience of working independently and carrying out independent research.
DESIRABLE
-
Experience with digital mixing consoles, and audio/video playback systems.

Experience with video conferencing, media servers and projection systems.
-
Familiarity with CAD drawings to assist with planning and documentation.

An awareness of communications systems within a live events environment.

Knowledge of safe working practices when rigging, onstage and working at height.

Experience with audio or video editing software.

An understanding of sound and video monitoring systems within a theatrical environment.

A basic understanding of electricity and electrical safety.

An awareness of networked audio, video and control systems.An awareness of health and safety within a live events environment.

GCSE Grade C/4 or above (or equivalent), in English and Mathematics.
Hours of Work
The contractual hours are based on 40 hours per week, worked over 6 days. The job will, at times, require unsociable working hours on weekends and evenings.
You will be given 1 day per week to study and/or attend college, either remotely or in person.
This is a fixed-term 26 month contract, starting in September 2026.
Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is £29,000 per annum. Salaries are reviewed annually on the 1st January.
