Forester
Location: Flexible – ideally based in the South West or Midlands
Employment type: Full-time
Company: Tomorrow’s Forests Ltd
About Tomorrow’s Forests
Tomorrow’s Forests is a growing, independent forestry business delivering woodland creation, forest management, harvesting, establishment and environmental projects across the UK.
We work with private landowners, estates, local authorities, charities and major organisations to create and manage woodlands that deliver long-term environmental, commercial and social benefits.
We are now looking for an experienced and motivated Forester to join our expanding team.
This is not a role where you will become a small part of a large organisation. You will be a key member of the business, trusted to develop projects, build client relationships and help shape the future growth of Tomorrow’s Forests.
The Role
You will manage a varied portfolio of forestry and woodland projects from initial client enquiry through to planning, approval and delivery.
The role will include a combination of woodland creation, forest management, grant applications, consultancy, client development and operational support. You will work closely with our directors, forestry team and operational crews to ensure projects are practical, commercially viable and delivered to a high standard.
There will also be opportunities to develop new services, build your own client base and take increasing responsibility as the company continues to grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare woodland creation designs, forest management plans and associated reports.
- Manage applications under schemes such as the England Woodland Creation Offer and Woodland Carbon Code.
- Undertake woodland surveys, site assessments and tree inspections.
- Produce planting plans, specifications, budgets and work programmes.
- Provide practical forestry advice to landowners, estates and other clients.
- Support the planning and delivery of planting, maintenance, harvesting and woodland management operations.
- Liaise with the Forestry Commission, local authorities, environmental organisations and other stakeholders.
- Use GIS and mapping software to prepare plans and supporting documentation.
- Manage multiple projects, deadlines and client relationships.
- Identify new opportunities and help generate additional work for the business.
- Ensure projects meet relevant environmental, regulatory and health and safety requirements.
About You
We are looking for someone who is commercially aware, organised and comfortable taking ownership of their work.
You should be able to communicate confidently with landowners, contractors, government bodies and other stakeholders. You will need to balance environmental objectives with the practical and financial realities of delivering forestry projects.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience working in forestry, woodland management, land management or a related environmental role.
- A relevant forestry, arboriculture, countryside management or environmental qualification.
- Knowledge of woodland creation, forest management and UK forestry regulations.
- Experience preparing grant applications or working with Forestry Commission schemes.
- Good written communication and report-writing skills.
- Strong project management and organisational abilities.
- Competence using Microsoft Office and GIS or digital mapping systems.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The ability to work independently while contributing to a close-knit team.
Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters, or progress towards membership, would be advantageous but is not essential.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to play an important role in a rapidly growing forestry business.
- Genuine responsibility and the freedom to develop your own projects and client relationships.
- A varied workload across woodland creation, management, harvesting and environmental consultancy.
- Direct involvement in business development and strategic decision-making.
- Support from an experienced forestry and operational delivery team.
- Opportunities for professional development, training and career progression.
- A practical, flexible working environment without unnecessary corporate bureaucracy.
- Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
- Company pension.
- Business mileage or company vehicle arrangements, depending on the role.
- Flexible and hybrid working where appropriate.
- The satisfaction of seeing projects progress from initial concept through to trees being planted and woodlands being managed on the ground.
