Full job description

At the National Stone Centre it is our mission to create outstanding opportunities that inspire everyone to engage with our Site of Special Scientific Interest. Every day, you will play a part in that mission by creating and delivering a varied, dynamic and informative programme of education and activities to children and adults to build a deeper understanding of our site and its features that makes the National Stone Centre important and unique. Your role will include planning sessions, adapting activities to suit different learners and making sure everything you do is safe and inclusive. You will also contribute to the development of new activities and work closely with a supportive team of staff and volunteers to improve and grow what we offer. This is an active role, and some weeks will be busy and demanding. The centre and site offer a peaceful, natural setting with outdoor learning spaces that enable people to feel fully connected to the landscape.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

· Liaise with educational facilities to promote the use of the outdoor features and activities of the centre in line with the national curriculum and provide an outreach programme to schools in the local area. This will include targeting and contacting schools that have not yet experienced the National Stone Centre and what it has to offer.

· Organise bookings and be a point of contact for the above activities

· Develop and deliver educational activity sessions to school groups in line with the national curriculum and school syllabus (primarily KS2)

· Develop activities and workshops around features of the centre’s outdoor site and heritage stories, or in response to relevant themes

· Create and develop educational and engagement resources for visitors, schools, families, youth groups and special interest groups

· Manage programmes, teams of education and engagement volunteers when carrying out activity sessions

· Conduct risk assessments for activities and group visits

· Be responsible for safeguarding onsite to Designated Safeguarding Lead level alongside colleagues

· Collate, evaluate and apply feedback on the educational and engagement activities as provided, reporting and using information to support development

· Work towards upholding the charitable aims of the National Stone Centre

Personal Specification

Essential:

· Enthusiasm, passion and an interest in the education and/or heritage sector

· Excellent communication and presentation skills

· Confident in planning sessions, preparing resources and engaging a wide range of learners

· Confidence in dealing with the public and addressing groups of people – experience gained as an educator, tour guide or community/youth worker is required

· Ability to process geological, historical and technical information to identify key stories and themes

· Teaching, engagement and interpretation skills to plan and deliver educational activities in engaging and creative ways to achieve National Curriculum requirements

· Commitment to working with school children, young people and special needs groups as well as adult groups and families

· Teamworking skills

· Self-motivated with the ability to work independently

· Flexible approach with the ability to adapt quickly to change and compromise where necessary

· Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines

· Organisation, problem solving and administration skills

· Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, cultural and disability issues

· Organisation of individuals enabling the smooth delivery of school visits and activities

Desirable:

· Knowledge of geology, quarrying or mining

· Experience of outdoor educational facility, teaching and/or activities coordination including National Curriculum (particularly KS2)

· Awareness of booking systems

· Prior experience of being a Designated Safeguarding Lead

· First Aid training

The majority of our school visits will be during the week though there may be occasional other events and duties which may require weekend and evening work.

This role is subject to a DBS check, safeguarding training and in line with the requirement of the current immigration and asylum legislation, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK.

Working hours are a minimum of three days per week to be worked flexibly, in line with pre-booked school visits (plus additional hours, when required). Salary stated is on a pro rata basis.
