Role purpose
The Bagel Maker and Kitchen Helper supports the daily preparation, assembly and service of BGL products. The role combines food preparation, customer service, cleaning, stock handling and opening or closing duties. The employee must work quickly and accurately while maintaining high standards of food hygiene, allergen control, presentation and customer care.
Main responsibilities
· Prepare bagels, fillings, schmears, salads, baked items and other menu products according to BGL recipes and portion standards.
· Assemble customer orders accurately, efficiently and consistently.
· Cook approved products after completing the required training.
· Follow preparation lists and ensure ingredients are ready for service.
· Assist with counter service, order handover, customer queries and till operation where trained.
· Maintain a clean, organised and stocked workstation throughout the shift.
· Complete opening, closing, cleaning, dishwashing and waste-disposal duties.
· Receive, check, label, date, rotate and store deliveries and ingredients correctly.
· Complete temperature, cleaning, food-safety, stock and waste records accurately.
· Report shortages, contamination, damaged stock, equipment faults or safety concerns immediately.
· Support the wider team during busy periods and perform other reasonable duties relevant to the role.
Food hygiene and allergens
· Follow BGL's food-safety procedures, allergen matrix, approved recipes and ingredient specifications.
· Prevent contamination and cross-contamination through correct handwashing, storage, cleaning and utensil use.
· Never guess when answering an allergen enquiry; refer uncertain questions to Jordan Moore or another authorised manager.
· Follow refrigeration, cooking, holding, cooling, date-labelling and stock-rotation requirements.
· Immediately report illness, contamination, unsafe food, pest activity, incorrect labels or damaged packaging.
· Complete all required food hygiene, allergen, health and safety and equipment training.
Cash, stock and security
· Record every sale, refund, discount, void, complimentary product and staff item correctly.
· Use only the till login or access details assigned to you.
· Do not take, borrow, consume, give away or remove cash, tips, food, drinks, stock, waste products, equipment or other BGL property without authorisation.
· Keep keys, alarm codes, passwords, till PINs, cash-storage arrangements and security procedures confidential.
· Do not photograph, film or share BGL recipes, preparation methods, tills, keys, codes, staff-only areas, supplier information or other confidential business information.
· Report cash, stock or security discrepancies immediately.
Shift expectations
· Work PT 20-25 paid hours per week, normally over five shifts.
· Work early mornings, daytime shifts, weekends and public or bank holidays according to the rota.
· Remain available for regular Saturday and Sunday work as agreed during recruitment.
· Attend every agreed shift, arrive ready to work at the scheduled start time and record all working time accurately.
· Complete required opening, closing, cleaning, meetings and training as paid working time.
· Take one 30-minute unpaid break on shifts lasting more than six hours.
· Obtain approval before swapping or changing a shift.
· Work the required notice period unless BGL agrees otherwise in writing.
Skills and personal requirements
· Reliable, punctual and comfortable working in a fast-paced café environment.
· Able to follow recipes, instructions and portion controls accurately.
· Good attention to cleanliness, presentation and detail.
· Able to communicate clearly with customers, colleagues and managers.
· Willing to complete cleaning and routine kitchen duties.
· Able to remain calm and organised during busy service periods.
· Honest and trustworthy when handling cash, stock, keys and confidential information.
· Able to stand for extended periods and safely perform normal café and kitchen duties.
· Previous hospitality or food-preparation experience is useful but not essential where the candidate is willing and able to learn.
Probation and standards
The first three months of employment will normally be probationary. Performance will be assessed against attendance, punctuality, reliability, speed, accuracy, food hygiene, allergen compliance, customer service, teamwork and ability to follow BGL procedures. Probation may be extended where reasonably required.
