About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the British Hen Welfare Trust at a pivotal time in our journey, as we continue to grow our impact and develop sustainable income streams to support our mission. As a proactive and relationship-focused fundraiser with a passion for making a difference, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering our fundraising strategy.
Your primary objective will be to drive income generation across a range of fundraising areas including regular giving, lottery, legacy giving, in memory fundraising, major donors and corporate partnerships. Alongside strategic development, you will take a hands-on approach to fundraising delivery, supporter engagement and donor stewardship, helping to strengthen long-term relationships and maximise sustainable income.
Working within a small and dynamic team, you will bring creativity, energy and fresh ideas to enhance supporter journeys, increase donor recruitment and retention, and develop impactful fundraising campaigns across digital, social media, email and postal channels.

Job Title: Strategic Fundraising Manager
Reports to: Joint Head of Operations
Salary: £38K - £40K
Hours: Full time (4 days per week considered)
Job Purpose
The Strategic Fundraising Manager will lead the development and delivery of the fundraising strategy to support the charity’s long-term objectives and income growth. The role combines strategic oversight with hands-on fundraising delivery across a range of income streams including regular giving, lottery, legacy giving, in memory fundraising, major donors and corporate partnerships.
Working within a small and dynamic team, the Strategic Fundraising Manager will develop the fundraising strategy including enhancing and improving supporter journeys to strengthen donor engagement, increasing donor recruitment and retention, strengthening donor stewardship and identifying new opportunities to maximise long-term sustainable income.
Main Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a fundraising strategy aligned to organisational objectives and income targets.
- Lead and grow individual giving income streams including regular giving, The BHWT lottery, in memory, legacy and major donor fundraising.
- Develop and manage fundraising campaigns across digital, postal, social media and email channels.
- Build and steward relationships with supporters, major donors, pledged legators and corporate partners.
- Develop donor journeys to improve supporter acquisition, engagement and retention.
- Support the research and submission of high-quality funding applications and proposals.
- Analyse fundraising activity and supporter data to maximise return on investment.
- Use CRM systems including Salesforce to segment supporter data and manage donor communications.
- Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications to develop compelling fundraising content.
- Provide line management and support to junior fundraising staff where required.
- Ensure fundraising activities comply with legislation, GDPR and fundraising best practice.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
Essential
- Proven experience in fundraising and income generation.
- Experience across individual giving, including regular giving, legacy and major donors.
- Experience of lottery fundraising.
- Experience delivering successful digital and direct marketing campaigns.
- Strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience working with supporter databases and segmentation.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work strategically and operationally within a small team.
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft 365 and CRM systems such as Salesforce.
- A strong empathy for animal welfare and the work of the charity.
Desirable
- Experience of managing staff.
- Experience working within the charity sector.
- Knowledge of donor stewardship and engagement best practice.
- Experience of project management or content creation tools.
Qualifications
Relevant professional fundraising experience is essential. A qualification in fundraising, marketing, communications, business or a related field is desirable
