Oxfordshire’s GP OOH service provides urgent medical advice and assessment to all patients living in the local area when normal primary care is closed. Operating between 6:30pm to 8am and 24 hours across weekends and bank holidays, the service provides advice and treatment for patients that have either called 111 or have entered the service through other means and require urgent primary care management. The service is provided by a multi-disciplinary team that includes GPs, Nurse and Paramedic practitioners, administrative and operational colleagues, all working together to provide clinical care from up to 6 bases, over the telephone or during a home visit.
The service now requires additional Bank GPs to join our team to provide triage, telephone and face to face patient care. The current vacant shifts are predominantly available in the evening and overnight period so priority will be given to GPs who can commit to working evenings and night shifts.

Not only can you expect interesting and varied work dealing with acute medical problems in patients both young and old, but you will also work with an excellent multidisciplinary team and benefit from the extensive programme of work we are undertaking to improve our systems and processes so that you feel supported and remain focused on your clinical work.
We are therefore keen to recruit GPs to our team that are at any stage of their career and can work any number of hours up to full time. This may be colleagues who have recently completed GP training or GPs that are further along in their career and wish to develop their portfolio career or are simply looking for a new challenge. We can offer an individually tailored induction programme to help you settle into your role followed by ongoing professional support from case review and peer feedback, all of which is designed to help you become an experienced and skilled Out Of Hours clinician.
Generally, the role requires similar skills to those of an in-hours GP although the following additional skills are desirable but not essential (as support and learning opportunities can be provided)
- Experience in palliative care and use of controlled drugs
- Catheter Management
Summary of Sessional (bank) Role
- Base visiting (patients attending a clinic appointment) or home visiting sessions available throughout the week including overnight sessions or a combination of all (support with telephone triage is required between face to face patients)
- Telephone triage shifts are also available and can be worked from any base.
- Regular, advanced block booking and ad hoc sessions available
- There is a requirement to undertake a minimum of 1-2 sessions per month
- Locations in Banbury, Bicester, Oxford, Witney, Abingdon and Henley
- Typical session is 4-5 hours in length which can be combined with further sessions to follow on i.e. back to back sessions
- Overnight sessions are usually 9 hours in length (11pm to 8am)
- For home visiting sessions and overnights, the GP will be accompanied by a driver in a trust vehicle.
