Dairy Herdsperson – Self-Employed Weekend Position
Location: Village Farm, Norfolk
Working Days: Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Hours: Approximately 10 hours per day (30 hours per week)
Contract: Self-employed / subcontractor
Reports to: Farm Manager
The Role
We are looking for a reliable and enthusiastic self-employed Dairy Herdsperson to join our team in Norfolk, working Friday to Sunday.
The role will involve approximately 10 hours per day, primarily assisting the existing team with milking, calf rearing and general dairy herd duties.
Additional hours may be available to cover staff holidays and other periods of absence.
The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for dairy farming, a strong work ethic and a commitment to high standards of animal welfare. A positive, practical can-do attitude and the ability to work well as part of a team are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out daily milking of cows using modern milking equipment, maintaining high standards of hygiene and efficiency.
- Assist with calf rearing and ensure calves are cared for to a high standard.
- Monitor cow signals, including lameness, bulling cows, illness and poor body condition.
- Assist with maintaining high standards of herd health and welfare.
- Work as part of the team to achieve the performance targets of the dairy unit and meet the requirements of the Arla contract.
- Follow farm procedures and maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and biosecurity.
- General dairy and livestock duties as required.
Experience & Skills
Essential:
- Previous experience working with dairy cattle.
- Experience of milking.
- Good understanding of animal welfare and cow health.
- Reliable, hardworking and able to work independently.
- Good attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Positive attitude and ability to work well within a team.
Desirable:
- Experience of calf rearing.
- Experience working within a block-calving system.
