Summary
We are seeking a trustworthy, detail-oriented volunteer Treasurer Trustee to join our Committee and help support the financial oversight of our small community preschool.
This is a voluntary trustee role, but it does not require the Treasurer to manage the preschool finances on a day-to-day basis. The preschool already has an experienced admin and finance assistant who supports the operational finance work, record keeping, invoicing and regular financial administration.
The Treasurer’s role is to help the committee understand the preschool’s financial position, ask helpful questions, and support sensible decision-making so that the preschool remains sustainable for children, families and staff.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing regular finance updates prepared by the preschool’s admin/finance
- assistant.
- Helping trustees understand income, spending, cash flow and budget
- pressures.
- Supporting the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts.
- Presenting a short finance update at committee meetings.
- Helping the committee consider affordability when making decisions.
- Supporting the annual accounts process alongside the preschool team and
- accountant/bookkeeper where applicable.
- Helping ensure the preschool continues to follow good financial practice as a
- charity.
- Acting as a supportive point of contact for financial questions from the committee.
We are keen to make this role manageable and realistic for a volunteer. The Treasurer would not be expected to take on all of the preschool’s finance administration.
The role would not normally include:
- Day-to-day bookkeeping.
- Raising invoices.
- Chasing parent payments.
- Processing payroll.
- Managing staff pensions.
- Completing everyday banking tasks.
- Keeping all financial records personally.
- Producing all accounts from scratch.
- Taking sole responsibility for financial decisions.
- Being “on call” for finance queries throughout the week.
These tasks are either already supported by employed staff, existing systems, or professional support where needed.
This role could suit someone who:
- Has some experience with finance, bookkeeping, budgeting, business administration, payroll, accounts, charity finance, school finance, or small business management.
- Enjoys working with numbers but does not need to be a qualified accountant.
- Can explain financial information in a clear and practical way.
- Is organised, reliable and willing to ask questions.
- Wants to support a valued local preschool and make a positive difference in the community.
What is the time commitment?
The role is designed to be manageable around work and family life. The usual commitment would include:
- Attending committee meetings.
- Reviewing finance information before meetings.
- Giving a short update to trustees.
- Occasional additional support around budget planning or annual accounts.
Support and handover will be provided, and the role can be shaped around the skills and availability of the right person.
