Deputy Manager – Residential Care Home

Glencairn House Care Home, Dorchester
Full-time | Permanent
Salary: £36,900 per annum
Hours: 40 per week

Glencairn House is a small, friendly residential care home in the heart of Dorchester. We are looking for an experienced, compassionate and organised Deputy Manager to join our management team and take the lead on the delivery of care throughout the home.

This is a varied role combining hands-on care leadership with management and administrative responsibilities. You will spend approximately 50% of your time working alongside the care team on the floor and 50% completing management, care planning, compliance and staff leadership duties.

You will work closely with the Registered Manager to ensure residents receive safe, effective and genuinely person-centred care. In the Registered Manager’s absence, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the home.

Key responsibilities

You will:

Lead the day-to-day delivery of care across the home.
Provide visible, supportive leadership to Senior Care Assistants and Care Assistants.
Create, review and maintain accurate, person-centred care plans and risk assessments.
Ensure residents and their families are involved in care planning and reviews.
Take the lead on medication management, including audits, competency assessments, medication errors and liaison with GPs and pharmacies.
Ensure staff follow safe medication procedures and use electronic medication systems correctly.
Support safeguarding referrals, investigations and action plans.
Complete Mental Capacity Assessments, best-interest documentation and DoLS applications where required.
Assist with the completion and submission of CQC notifications.
Support the home to remain compliant with CQC regulations, legislation and company policies.
Line manage designated staff, completing supervisions, appraisals, probation reviews and performance meetings.
Support recruitment, induction, training and development of the care team.
Monitor staff practice and provide coaching, feedback and competency observations.
Liaise with families, GPs, district nurses, pharmacists, social workers and other healthcare professionals.
Support pre-admission assessments and the safe admission of new residents.
Review accidents, incidents, falls, safeguarding concerns and medication errors, ensuring lessons are learned.
Participate in quality audits and improvement plans.
Assist with staff rotas and ensure safe staffing levels and an appropriate skill mix.
Respond professionally to concerns and complaints.
Work alongside the care team, leading shifts and supporting residents when required.
Promote dignity, independence, choice, wellbeing and positive outcomes for every resident.

About you

We are looking for someone who:

Has previous experience in a senior care, team leader or deputy management role within adult social care.
Has experience working in a residential care home.
Holds a Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care or equivalent.
Ideally holds, or is willing to work towards, a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management for Adult Care.
Has strong knowledge of person-centred care planning and risk assessment.
Has experience in medication administration and medication management.
Understands safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
Has experience supervising or line managing staff.
Is confident liaising with residents, families and healthcare professionals.
Has excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills.
Is organised, reliable and able to prioritise a busy workload.
Is confident challenging unsafe or poor practice appropriately.
Is kind, approachable and committed to maintaining high standards of care.
Is willing to work flexibly, including some weekends and participation in an on-call arrangement where required.
