About the Role:
At SCL Transport Solutions Ltd, we help businesses move goods efficiently, safely and reliably across Scotland and the wider United Kingdom. From fleet coordination and route planning to customer delivery performance, our operations team plays a central role in keeping every part of the business moving.
We are looking for a Director of Transport Operations who can take full ownership of our transport network and operational performance. You will lead our transport, fleet and logistics teams while ensuring that services are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with customer expectations.
You will work closely with senior management, clients, drivers, suppliers and operational teams to improve performance, control costs and support the continued growth of the company.

Key Responsibilities:
Transport Operations Leadership:
Lead the day-to-day and long-term management of transport, fleet and distribution operations across the business.
Operational Strategy:
Develop and implement transport strategies that improve delivery performance, vehicle utilisation, productivity and customer satisfaction.
Fleet Management:
Oversee vehicle availability, maintenance schedules, fleet replacement planning and relationships with external maintenance providers.
Team Leadership:
Manage and support transport managers, planners, supervisors, drivers and administrative staff. Set clear performance expectations and provide regular coaching and feedback.
Compliance and Safety:
Ensure that all transport activities comply with relevant operator licensing, road safety, driver working time and company health and safety requirements.
Performance Management:
Monitor key operational measures including on-time delivery, vehicle utilisation, fuel consumption, driver performance and transport costs.
Budget Responsibility:
Prepare and manage transport budgets while identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary costs without affecting service quality.
Customer Service:
Work with key customers to understand their delivery requirements, resolve operational issues and maintain strong commercial relationships.
Supplier Management:
Manage relationships with vehicle providers, fuel suppliers, maintenance contractors and other operational partners.
Continuous Improvement:
Review existing transport processes and introduce practical improvements that increase efficiency, safety and service reliability.
What We Are Looking For:
Experience:
At least 7 years of experience in transport, logistics, fleet or distribution operations, including significant experience in a senior leadership role.
Leadership:
Proven ability to lead managers, operational teams and drivers in a demanding transport environment.
Industry Knowledge:
Strong understanding of transport operations, fleet compliance, route planning, health and safety and service performance management.
Commercial Awareness:
Experience managing budgets, controlling operating costs and supporting commercial decision-making.
Communication Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the confidence to work with employees, customers, suppliers and senior stakeholders.
Problem Solving:
Ability to make sound operational decisions under pressure and manage service disruptions effectively.
Technology:
Comfortable using transport management systems, fleet tracking platforms, reporting tools and Microsoft Office applications.
Qualifications:
A relevant qualification in transport, logistics, operations management or business management is desirable.
A Transport Manager Certificate of Professional Competence is advantageous but not essential.
Mindset:
You are practical, organised and commercially aware. You understand how to balance customer service, employee safety, compliance and operational efficiency.
Pay: £62,000.00-£112,000.00 per year
