This post is a replacement position to assist our existing consultant team with a busy specialist workload. The trust is a major site for plastic reconstruction, skin/head/neck cancer, oral and maxillofacial pathology, and this role would be suited to candidates with expertise within these specialities – the successful candidate will have experience of, and an interest in, reporting skin and/or oral, head and neck and maxillofacial pathology.
The post holder will be based at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead or remotely. Remote working in line with RCPath guidelines is permitted.
This post is advertised as a full-time post although less than full time or job share arrangements would be considered. Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues. The ten PAs will include 1.5 PAs (or pro rata if less than full time) for supporting activities and administration.
At present there is no requirement to cover clinical responsibilities outside the hours of the traditional working week and the flexibility to work from home (according to College guidelines) for some of the week is an important aspect of the Trust’s commitment to flexible working.
The appointee will be expected to make a substantial contribution to the workload of the Histopathology service (including some diagnostic cytopathology). The case load and case mix of each consultant varies with special interest and is kept under review as part of consultant job planning and on-going departmental management.

As a Consultant at the Trust, it is expected that you will share responsibility for the development and delivery of your clinical service. You will work with colleagues to ensure that your service meets all relevant professional, national, and local service standards and targets. You will contribute to the delivery of an annual service plan and be expected to take part in audit and publish measures of key performance indicators appropriate to the department’s Histopathology workload and case mix.
As a senior figure and role model in the organisation, you will demonstrate the behaviour and values that are expected of all staff: in particular, taking pride in the services we offer, showing humanity and consideration for patients and colleagues, and seeking continuous improvement through research, development, and innovation. You will actively engage with the General Medical Council revalidation process or General Dental Council requirements.
The job plan provides scheduling details of the clinical activity and clinically related activity components of the job plan that occur at regular times in the week. Note that some government and NHS objectives will affect the working lives of most consultant staff and it is expected that consultants will approach this in a collaborative fashion for the benefit of patients.
