Structural Engineer
Southampton City Council is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our multi-disciplinary Design Services team.
About the role
This is an opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of projects across the Council's estate, including housing, schools, corporate buildings, community facilities, maritime assets and regeneration schemes. You will play a key role in delivering professional structural engineering services that help maintain, improve and develop assets that support our city and its communities.
About you
We are looking for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) who can provide technical leadership, professional assurance and structural engineering expertise across a wide range of projects. Membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE) is highly desirable, although applications from Chartered Members of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE) with significant structural engineering experience are also welcomed.
You will manage your own workload, undertake structural analysis and design, prepare and review calculations, provide technical advice and support projects from inception through to completion. Working alongside architects, building surveyors, building services engineers and project managers, you will help deliver practical, high-quality and cost-effective solutions.
The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, standards and professional practice, including Building Regulations, CDM Regulations 2015, British Standards and BIM requirements. Experience of reviewing and checking third-party structural calculations submitted in support of Building Regulations applications is essential.
Knowledge and practical experience of the Building Safety Act and its application to higher-risk residential buildings is highly desirable. The Council manages a portfolio of 21 high-rise residential buildings and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of building safety and compliance.
The role involves regular visits to construction sites and council properties across the city. Applicants must be able to travel independently in order to meet the requirements of the post.

Salary: The salary band for this role is £47,181 - £51,357. The starting salary is £47,181 with annual progression through the salary bands.
