Job Description:
This is a hands-on supervisor role: you're on the tools every day, fabricating, assembling and welding alongside the team, and you're the one setting the pace and the standard. We're not after someone who wants to trade the workshop for an office. We want an A-player who leads from the front, who's still the best pair of hands on the floor, and who makes sure everyone else's work matches theirs.
You'll be building structural steelwork, steel buildings, assembling cold-rolled (LGSF) frames and cladding components, working first and foremost from CAD drawings, so work is built accurately and consistently to spec every time. Alongside your own bench work, you'll have a supervisory role organising the workshop's workload, keeping quality consistent across the team, and stepping in wherever the job needs it.
Location: Wolverhampton (workshop-based)
Pay: £33,000/annum
Hours: Full-time, based in our Wolverhampton workshop
About the Role
This is a shop-floor role built around doing it all: fabrication, assembly and welding, day in and day out, plus running the team while you do it. Most of our work is structural steelwork and cold-rolled (LGSF) frames for steel buildings, along with cladding and flashing components and the odd refurbishment job. We work first and foremost to CAD drawings, so you'll need to read a detailed drawing confidently and build exactly to it, square, level, fit-for-purpose and looking the part, every time.
This isn't a desk-based supervisor role. You'll be at the bench or on the tools for the majority of your time, leading by example rather than just instruction. If you're the kind of person other tradespeople already look to for the answer, and you're ready to make that official, we want to hear from you.
Fabrication, Assembly & Welding
● MIG welding structural steelwork to a sound, consistent standard;
● Fabricating structural steelwork and LGSF (cold-rolled) frame components;
● Assembling completed components and structures accurately, ready for site or dispatch;
● Producing cladding and flashing components to spec;
● Fabricating brackets, supports, fixings and modifications as jobs demand;
● Refurbishing and modifying older client projects when they come back to us;
● Reading and working accurately from detailed CAD drawings, every job, every time;
● Organising the day's workload across the team and making sure it gets done to standard;
● Checking and signing off other people's work, and putting it right where it needs it.
Leading the Team
You're the benchmark. On top of your own bench work, you'll be organising workload, keeping quality consistent across the workshop, mentoring less experienced team members, and being the person people bring problems to before they become bigger problems. This is a working supervisor role, on the tools first, supervising as you go, not stepping back from the trade.
Occasional Site Work
Every now and then a job needs an extra pair of hands on site to help get an install right, or you may be asked to support with site welding where it opens up more of our work. This isn't the focus of the role and it's not a regular occurrence, we're happy to talk you through what that looks like at interview.
Must Have
● Skilled MIG welder, able to lay down a sound structural weld consistently;
● Genuine fabrication and assembly skills, able to build accurately and to a high standard, every time;
● Experience with structural steelwork and ideally LGSF / cold-rolled work, this is the bulk of what we do;
● Confident and accurate reading detailed CAD drawings and building exactly to spec;
● Previous experience supervising, leading, or informally running a team on the tools;
● A-player mentality, pride in your work, ownership of the outcome, no hand-holding required;
● Full driving licence.
Bonus Points For
● Formal supervisory or team leader qualifications or training;
● Coded welding qualifications;
● Site experience, erecting steel, working from scaffold or MEWPs;
● CSCS, IPAF, PASMA or other relevant site tickets;
● Own hand tools but not essential.
What's in it For You
● A varied, hands-on role, no two jobs the same;
● Mostly workshop-based, with the occasional change of scene when a job needs it;
● Real authority to run the workshop your way, not just a title;
● Steady, established business with repeat clients and a proper pipeline of work;
● Training and tickets paid for where it makes sense.
