Museum Advisory Board Member – Science & Industry Museum

The Science Museum Group’s (SMG) mission is to ‘Inspire futures’ and we share our unparalleled collection of over seven million objects spanning science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with over 3.8 million visitors each year, in addition to over 650,000 school visits and a huge digital audience. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we are uniquely placed to draw people of all ages to engage with science in an inspirational and informal way with our extensive national and international programme of exhibitions, research, skills sharing and consultancy.

As part of SMG, the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester has an Advisory Board specific to the museum. The board comprises experts from across the relevant regional, cultural, academic and industry sectors. These advisors act as a group of key allies and ‘critical friends’ in providing strategic advice to the museum director. They assist in building networks and advising on issues relating to the museum’s role in civic leadership, public programming and the visitor offer, providing advice and guidance where necessary, as well as attending annual meeting(s) where required (no more than twice per year).

The Science and Industry Museum is seeking to appoint 2 new members:

One new member from the business sector in Manchester, with strong business networks
One new member with a background and expertise in education, skills and careers

We would particularly welcome applications from Black, Black British, African or Caribbean candidates, who are currently underrepresented in our organisation.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

Members would take up post for a term of up to four years, renewable once. Member appointments and all renewals will be made by the Committee Chair, in consultation with the relevant museum director, SMG Chair and SMG Director.

In addition to the specialisms listed above, we would be looking for members who have:

Experience in offering strategic advice to management.
Experience in prioritising activities and projects to align with strategic activities and priorities
The ability to assess risk, trends and opportunities
An enthusiasm for museums and the role they can play in placemaking and regional growth

At and outside meetings the Committee will:

Give advice on the role of the museum in the region, and how it can maximise positive impact for visitors and the wider community
Give advice on the content of the museum’s public programmes (exhibitions, events, holiday and schools programmes)
Connect the museum with relevant individuals and networks
Consider the progress of major projects, providing expert advice and guidance
Act as an advocate for the museum in the wider community
