Are you a skilled engineer with experience in plant operations, maintenance, or industrial environments? Do you enjoy solving problems, leading teams, and being at the heart of day-to-day operations?
We're looking for a Shift Engineer to keep our plant and equipment operating as it should on a major nuclear site. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll oversee the safe running of the plant, support a team of engineers and technicians, and ensure equipment performs reliably around the clock.
No two days are the same. You'll be making priority decisions, responding to plant issues, coordinating maintenance activities, and helping to maintain the highest standards of safety and performance.
What you'll be doing
As a Shift Engineer, you'll play a key role in keeping the plant operating safely and efficiently.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and supervising a small team, providing support, direction and coaching.
- Managing planned and reactive maintenance activities to keep plant equipment available and reliable.
- Monitoring plant performance and identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Investigating faults, identifying root causes and ensuring effective corrective actions are implemented.
You'll also:
- Help to ensure the plant operates within licensed operating limits and routine testing programmes are completed.
- Control plant operating status and configuration during normal operations and outages.
- Prepare and issue safety documents in line with company procedures.
- Carry out plant inspections, identify hazards and support risk assessments.
- Ensure work areas are maintained to the highest safety and housekeeping standards.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and promote strong operational standards across the site.
What we're looking for
We're interested in experienced engineers who enjoy leading people and solving technical problems in a safety-focused environment. You'll ideally have:
- HNC, HND, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience in an engineering discipline.
- Hands-on experience within industrial, manufacturing, utilities, energy, process, heavy engineering, maintenance or nuclear environments.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills across mechanical, electrical, controls or instrumentation systems.
- Experience leading, supervising or coordinating engineering, maintenance or craft teams.
- Good understanding of safe systems of work, permits, risk assessments and operational procedures.
- The ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions in a live operational environment.
- To be able to work a rotating shift pattern, where a shift premium is paid.
It would be beneficial if you also have:
- Experience with programmable logic controller fault diagnosis, ventilation systems or building energy management systems.
- Membership of a recognised engineering institution, or a desire to work towards professional registration.
- Experience writing technical reports, work instructions or operational documentation.
