CARE ASSISTANT

Qualifications: Care ACT Certificate / Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care or prepared to work towards it
Nature of Job
- To work with other staff in meeting the personal care needs of the service users in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence and to help in the general day to day activities of the home.
- To observe and report to the Senior Nurses (Senior Care Assistants, Registered Nurses) on the condition or any significant changes in the health or circumstances of a service user.
- To be aware of the various social activities in the home and to participate in them.
- Care provided by Care Assistants is expected to include care that would reasonably be given by members of the service user’s own family and is not expected to include tasks that would normally be undertaken by trained staff.
Principal Responsibilities
- To assist in providing the highest standards of personal care and attention for the service users under the direction and supervision of Senior Nurses.
- To participate fully in the overall care of the service user with other staff. To assist with washing, dressing, toileting and personal hygiene as per the care plan.
- To provide clinical support to senior staff.
- Duties in the Dining room include serving the service users, assisting service users to eat, clearing away of dirty dishes, wiping down tables etc.
- Assist with the implementation of planned nursing care under the direction and supervision of senior staff.
- To help provide essential physical and mental stimulation by participating in recreational and social activities with service users individually, or in a group.
- To make and change beds, tidy rooms, bathrooms, toilets and do any cleaning where necessary. Ensure that commode pots are cleaned and disinfected immediately after use.
- Show responsibility and care towards resident’s property, i.e. personal clothing, dentures, glasses and all other belongings, ensuring that these are properly recorded and marked. If any item is in need of repair to report it to the senior staff/Administrator.
- Answer call systems, the door bell and the telephone promptly.
- Greet visitors, ensure they use the visitor’s log and escort to appropriate resident’s room.
- To be polite and helpful at all times, i.e. appropriate conduct and attitude towards service users, visitors and colleagues.
- To read and write reports and take part in staff and service user’s meetings as directed.
- To perform such other duties as required or directed by the senior staff, which may reasonably fall within the scope or range of the post, to ensure the comfort of the service users and/or the smooth running of the home.
Observe the following in relation to the Home’s policies, Procedures and Guidelines
- Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to service users and the nursing home.
- Be fully aware and comply with the Home’s policies and procedures at all times.
- Be familiar with and strictly adhere to the nursing home’s Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures and to be conscious of the need for safety of the residents.
- Report any incident / untoward occurrences and accidents immediately and complete necessary documentation as required.
- Be familiar with the Control of Infection Policy and the measures to prevent cross infection / infestations. Report any suspicion of such immediately.
- Exercise due care in the use and storage of equipment and report any damage immediately.
- Report any complaints that service users, visitors or staff express immediately so reparatory action can be taken.
- Comply with written agreed conditions of employment, e.g. hours of duty, uniform, time keeping.
- Demonstrate a professional approach to work in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England (published by Skills for Care).
In-Service Training and Staff Development
- Participate fully in the induction programme planned for you upon taking up employment.
- Identify own learning needs, participate in the home’s supervision programme.
- Attend fire lectures, fire drills and training sessions as instructed.
- Attend a ‘Moving People Safely’ course before undertaking the handling / transfers of service users.
- To have knowledge and use of any equipment within the home, to check its usability and its readiness for use.
Risk Management / Health and Safety
The post holder has a responsibility to themselves and others in relation to managing risk, health and safety and will be required to work within the policies and procedures laid down by the home.
