Maintenance Person

About the Role
We are looking for a reliable, practical and proactive Maintenance Person to join our friendly team at Hailey House Residential Care Home. This is an important role that helps ensure our home remains safe, comfortable and well-maintained for the people who live and work here.
Working closely with the Registered Manager and Deputy Manager, you will carry out a wide range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks throughout the home and grounds. You will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment, completing statutory health and safety checks, responding promptly to maintenance requests, and helping to ensure the home is always presented to a high standard.
As you will be working within a care home environment, you must be respectful, approachable and considerate of residents at all times, recognising that many people living in the home may have dementia, reduced mobility or other vulnerabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out day-to-day maintenance and repair work throughout the care home.
- Complete general plumbing, carpentry, painting, decorating and other basic maintenance tasks.
- Maintain bedrooms, communal areas, bathrooms, kitchens, offices and outdoor areas to a high standard.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and prioritise repairs appropriately.
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance to minimise equipment failures and maintain the fabric of the building.
- Complete regular health and safety checks including fire safety inspections, water temperature monitoring, emergency lighting checks and other compliance checks required by the service.
- Identify hazards, defects or maintenance issues and report those requiring specialist attention to management without delay.
- Liaise with and supervise external contractors, ensuring work is completed safely and to an acceptable standard.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance work completed, safety inspections and statutory checks.
- Prepare bedrooms for new admissions by assembling furniture and equipment, carrying out repairs, decorating where required and ensuring rooms are clean, safe and ready for occupation.
- Assist with moving furniture and equipment when required.
- Ensure tools, equipment and maintenance stores are kept clean, secure and organised.
- Help maintain the external appearance of the home, including pathways, fencing, garden furniture and outdoor areas.
- Support emergency maintenance requirements to minimise disruption to residents and the running of the home.
- Work closely with management to identify planned maintenance requirements and improvements to the environment.
- Occasionally provide out-of-hours support for emergency maintenance issues when required, ensuring urgent repairs are addressed promptly to minimise disruption and maintain a safe environment for residents.
- Work flexibly during emergencies and severe weather events to help maintain the safe operation of the home and essential services.
Health & Safety
The successful candidate will work in accordance with all relevant health and safety legislation, COSHH regulations, infection prevention and control procedures and company policies.
You will take responsibility for identifying and reporting hazards, ensuring equipment is safe to use, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and carrying out maintenance work safely. Any repairs beyond your level of competence must be reported to management and referred to approved contractors where necessary.
Safeguarding
As this role involves working within a residential care home supporting vulnerable adults, safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.
You will be expected to maintain professional boundaries at all times, promote residents' dignity, privacy and wellbeing, and immediately report any safeguarding concerns in line with the home's safeguarding procedures.
About You
We're looking for someone who is practical, dependable and enjoys solving problems. You will be able to work independently while also being part of a supportive team.
You will have:
- Previous maintenance, handyman or property maintenance experience (essential).
- Experience within a care home, healthcare or similar environment (desirable).
- Good knowledge of general building maintenance, including basic plumbing, carpentry and decorating.
- A good understanding of health and safety practices.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage your workload effectively.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- A flexible, positive and proactive approach to work.
- The ability to work respectfully around elderly residents, visitors and colleagues.
- The ability to undertake manual handling tasks safely.
