Department: IT
Reports to: Data and Insight Manager
Location: Newcastle
Type: Full Time, Hybrid
Summary:
We are seeking a motivated Junior Data Analyst to join our team, ideal for a graduate or early-career candidate looking to build a career in data and analytics. The role holder will support the wider Data and Insight team by extracting and checking data and building straightforward Power BI reports and components of reports under the guidance of senior colleagues. This is a supportive, learning-focused role with clear opportunities for progression as skills and experience develop; full training and mentoring will be provided by senior analysts within the team.
Responsibilities:
- Retrieve and analyse data from SQL Server databases using SQL queries, under guidance from senior colleagues.
- Assist with data validation and cleaning processes to help maintain the accuracy and integrity of source data.
- Support the design and build of Power BI reports and dashboards, working from clear requirements set by senior team members or stakeholders.
- Help maintain existing dashboards and reports, applying agreed design and usability standards.
- Assist in gathering stakeholder requirements for new reporting requests, escalating more complex or ambiguous requirements to a senior analyst.
- Carry out routine and ad-hoc data extracts and reporting requests for business users.
- Perform basic quantitative analysis (e.g. summarising trends, producing simple comparisons) to support senior analysts' work.
- Maintain awareness of day-to-day pipeline and report health, escalating any issues to senior colleagues or the data engineer.
- Help create and maintain documentation such as report catalogues, data dictionaries and basic requirements notes.
- Take part in training and development activities to build skills in SQL, Power BI, and (over time) Microsoft Fabric.
- Plan and prioritise own workload day-to-day, seeking support from senior colleagues on more complex or time-sensitive tasks.
Skills and Experience:
- Degree in a numerate, technical, or business-related field (e.g. Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics), or equivalent relevant experience.
- Basic working knowledge of SQL/Python, gained through study, personal projects, internships, or work experience (full training provided).
- Comfortable working with Microsoft Excel for simple data manipulation and analysis.
- Some exposure to Power BI or a similar visualisation tool (e.g. through coursework or personal projects) is desirable.
- Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to checking and validating data.
- Willingness to learn and ask questions, with an interest in developing towards a more senior Data Analyst role over time.
- Able to communicate clearly with colleagues and explain straightforward findings to non-technical audiences.
- Comfortable working both independently on well-defined tasks and collaboratively within a supportive team.
- Able to manage own time and prioritise a small number of concurrent tasks.
