Hereford BID is looking for a reliable, practical and proactive Lead Handyperson / Outdoor Maintenance Operative to help keep Hereford city centre clean, attractive and welcoming for businesses, visitors and shoppers.
This is a varied, hands-on outdoor role. We need someone who is prepared to undertake the unpleasant jobs as willingly as the enjoyable ones. Whether it involves removing graffiti, cleaning a difficult area, watering flowers, completing a repair or helping at a major event, you must be willing to get stuck in and see the job through.
You will often work alone and, when required, direct and work alongside a part-time assistant. You must be able to manage your own workload, organise daily tasks and ensure agreed objectives are completed properly and on time without close supervision.
You will also need to be friendly, approachable and professional, as the role involves regular contact with businesses and members of the public across the city centre.
As part of your role you will be required to undertake a number of health and safety training courses.
Your initial duties
You will initially take responsibility for watering Hereford BID’s hanging baskets, planters and floral displays during the summer.
During the spring and summer watering season, you will normally work approximately four early mornings each week, starting at around 4am.
Reliability is essential. Our floral displays must be watered consistently, thoroughly and at the correct times. You must be able to organise the work, complete every agreed route and communicate immediately if a problem prevents any part of the work from being completed.
From October, working hours will return to the normal pattern, with a usual start time of 8am.
Main duties
Your responsibilities will include:
- Cleaning/ painting/ some gardening/ DIY repairs
- Working confidently and safely alone for extended periods
- Planning and managing your daily and weekly workload
- Directing and working alongside a part-time assistant when required
- Ensuring agreed work and objectives are completed properly and on time
- Keeping management informed of progress, problems or missed work
- Street cleaning and environmental maintenance in public areas
- Removing chewing gum, graffiti and stickers
- Jet washing pavements and other hard surfaces
- Cleaning corners and areas not easily reached by larger cleansing equipment
- Cleaning difficult, dirty or unpleasant areas when required
- Cleaning windows, entrances and doorways of empty premises where authorised
- Watering hanging baskets, planters and floral displays
- Light gardening, planting, pruning, deadheading and weeding
- Monitoring the health and condition of floral displays
- Undertaking minor repairs, painting and general DIY work
- Installing hanging-basket brackets and other authorised fixtures
- Supporting the setup and dismantling of gazebos, stages and event equipment
- Reporting damage, vandalism and maintenance concerns
- Occasionally distributing newsletters and leaflets to BID businesses
- Maintaining positive relationships with city-centre businesses
Essential requirements
Applicants must have:
- Previous experience of working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Practical gardening or grounds-maintenance experience
- At least two years’ practical DIY, repairs or maintenance experience
- Experience of applying health and safety requirements in a working environment
- An understanding of risk assessments and safe working practices
- The ability and confidence to work alone for extended periods
- Experience of directing, coordinating or supervising another person
- Strong self-management and organisational skills
- Experience of planning work and delivering agreed objectives
- Excellent reliability, punctuality and time management
- A willingness to undertake unpleasant, dirty and physically demanding work
- The ability to identify what needs doing and use initiative
- Good attention to detail and pride in maintaining high standards
- A friendly, approachable and professional manner
- The confidence to communicate with businesses and members of the public
- The flexibility to undertake regular 4am starts during the watering season
- The flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends
A full UK driving licence is desirable.

The role regularly involves working at height on ladders, including when installing hanging-basket brackets. Appropriate training will be provided.
