We build and operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs. The business has three main divisions: development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools, and operation of the factory. We work with 25+ customers and completed the largest ever Series A in composites manufacturing to fuel a significant scale-up, with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next two to three years and expand operations into the UK, Europe and the US.
The business has currently more than 130,000 sqm of production capacity with manufacturing facilities in the UK and the US; a Hardware R&D Centre in Bristol, UK; and a Software R&D Centre in Athens, Greece.
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team. The Associate Mechanical Engineer will be heavily involved in design and optimising current and future systems relating to Rapid Tow Shearing (RTS) machine and auxiliary equipment. The role will suit a person that enjoys a mix of practical hands on approach as well as office based Design and analysis. The candidate will need to demonstrate experience of both elements. The Engineer will play a key role in specifying, commissioning, and developing the RTS and supporting processes. Finally they will be responsible for Continuous Improvement activities in the manufacturing environment – developing the RTS process & implementing automation across the product flow.
What will you be doing?
Strong design skills using 3D CAD with proven experience of FEA, managing Drawings database and ECR control.
Proven experience of Hands on Engineering. Comfortable with hands on practical assembly, use of power & hand tools.
Drive improvements to enhance efficiency, product quality, reduce waste, and minimize costs through CI initiatives.
Good knowledge of standard Engineering equipment (i.e, Bearings, Pneumatic cylinders, fasteners) and best practice to integrate into designs.
Lead projects to develop System Design from concept to production.
Use Structured Problem Solving to determine Root Cause on Overall Equipment Effectiveness / Quality / Operations related issues.
Identify, liaise and build working relationships with Equipment suppliers.
Lead projects to introduce new technologies, equipment, or automation systems to improve manufacturing capabilities and competitiveness.
Working with Quality Assurance, Engineering and Design to ensure APQP activities are delivered effectively during process development.
Specify and develop manufacturing processes into operations.
Lead FMEA activities, delivering overall risk reduction in the area of responsibility.
Develop Assembly instructions & Quality control procedures for Systems Assembly.
Design layout for new manufacturing cells using lean principals.
Analyse MES data and performance metrics to monitor production efficiency, identify trends, and drive performance improvements.
Drive I4.0 and I5.0 vision for the manufacturing environment – striving for a lights out, fully automated composite manufacturing plant.
What do we need from you?
Must have:
Qualified to HND level or equivalent experience in an engineering discipline. Degree level preferrable.
Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Mechanical or Design Engineer, with a proven track record of Hands on and Design roles.
Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD applications and mechanical design.
Good knowledge of manufacturing & machining process.
Knowledge of APQP and QMS systems.
Proficiency in data analysis and statistical tools (e.g., Excel, Minitab, Power BI) to analyse performance.
Excellent project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive projects to completion on schedule and within budget.
Working knowledge of ISO and TS quality standards.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Self-driven and able to work autonomously.
Nice to have:
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, methodologies, and problem solving tools (e.g., Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5S).
Experience with process optimization, value stream mapping, and root cause analysis techniques.
Previous experience of machine building.
In depth knowledge of Solidworks & PDM
Experience with automated manufacturing equipment – incorporating robotics
Knowledge of composite materials
