Part-Time HR Manager
£21.00 - £24.00 per hour (depending on experience and qualifications)
Flexible School-Hour Working | 30 Days Holiday Pro Rata
Horner Shearing, West Bradford, Clitheroe, BB7 4QH
Are you a qualified, experienced and approachable HR professional who enjoys working independently and giving practical advice? Are you looking for a flexible part-time position that can fit around school hours? If you are organised, discreet and confident handling day-to-day HR matters, this could be the job for you.
About us:
Horner Shearing is a family-run business based in the village of West Bradford, a short drive from Clitheroe. Established in 1989, we have grown from a husband-and-wife partnership into a successful international business, while remaining firmly rooted in the agricultural community.
Our story began when founders Willie and Mary Horner designed and sold the ground-breaking Longhorn 12v shearing machine, which has since become iconic among professional shearers and farmers around the world.
Still managed by founder Willie and his son Will, we are proud to be a traditional, local, family business. We value straightforward communication, strong working relationships and a practical, team-focused approach.
From our site in West Bradford, we cover the full process from the manufacture and fabrication of our world-renowned sheep shearing products through to sales, servicing, repairs and product innovation.
We are now looking for a qualified Part-Time HR Manager to join our team. The role will take ownership of day-to-day HR administration, employee relations and employment compliance, working independently with support from the business owners and departmental managers.
The role:
You will be the main point of contact for day-to-day HR matters across the business. The role will involve advising managers and employees, maintaining accurate and legally compliant documentation, supporting recruitment and onboarding, and managing employee-relations processes in a fair and consistent way. Payroll administration will remain with the Office Manager, with the company's accountant processing payroll; the HR Manager will provide relevant employee information and authorised changes when required. We are looking for someone who is confident taking ownership of routine HR work while recognising when specialist legal or external advice is required.
Your duties will include the following:
- Providing practical and professional HR advice to the business owners, department managers and employees
- Maintaining and updating employment contracts, staff handbooks, policies, procedures, letters and HR forms
- Keeping up to date with UK employment law and advising the business on relevant changes and required actions
- Supporting recruitment, including job adverts, applicant screening, interviews, offers, references and pre-employment checks
- Preparing contracts and new-starter documentation and helping managers organise effective inductions
- Monitoring probation periods and supporting managers with probation reviews and confirmation letters
- Managing absence procedures, return-to-work processes, long-term absence cases and occupational-health referrals where appropriate
- Advising and supporting managers with performance, capability, conduct, grievance and disciplinary matters
- Attending formal meetings where required and preparing clear notes, outcome letters and supporting documentation
- Advising on holidays, family leave, flexible-working requests and other employee matters
- Maintaining accurate, confidential employee records and ensuring personal information is handled appropriately
- Providing relevant employee information and authorised changes to the Office Manager for payroll purposes, while payroll administration remains with the Office Manager and the company's accountant processes payroll
- Helping to organise appraisals, training records and employee development activity
- Reviewing existing HR processes and introducing simple, consistent systems that work well for a practical manufacturing business
- Acting as an approachable and confidential point of contact for employees while maintaining fair and professional boundaries
- Liaising with external HR, legal or occupational-health advisers when specialist support is needed
- Other varied HR duties as required
Candidates must have:
- CIPD Level 5 or above, or an equivalent recognised professional HR qualification
- Strong generalist HR experience and the confidence to manage day-to-day HR matters independently
- A current and practical working knowledge of UK employment law and good HR practice
- Experience advising managers and handling employee-relations matters, including absence, performance, conduct and grievance processes
- Excellent judgement, discretion and an understanding of the importance of confidentiality
- Clear verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain HR matters in a straightforward way
- Strong organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to keep accurate records and follow matters through
- A fair, approachable and professional manner when dealing with both managers and employees
- The confidence to take ownership, make sensible recommendations and know when further advice is required
- Good computer skills and confidence preparing professional letters, policies, records and reports
- A practical can-do attitude and a willingness to help improve how the business manages its people
Ideally candidates will:
- Have experience working as an HR Manager, HR Adviser or HR Generalist in a small or medium-sized business
- Have worked in manufacturing, engineering, agriculture or another practical working environment
- Have experience developing and updating staff handbooks, policies and straightforward HR systems
- Be confident supporting recruitment, onboarding, probation reviews and manager training
- Have experience liaising with internal payroll administrators, accountants and external employment-law or occupational-health advisers
- Understand the needs and working style of a family-run business
What we offer you:
- A friendly working environment in a family-run firm
- An open-plan, bright, modern workspace in a beautiful rural setting
- A flexible part-time position that can be arranged around school hours
- The opportunity to take ownership of the day-to-day HR function while working closely with the business owners and department managers
