Job description
NXT Skills is looking for a creative, calm and motivated Instructor to join our team in Fareham, with a particular focus on digital media, music production, video editing and creative content.
This is a varied and rewarding role supporting young people aged 14–25 with SEMH, SEN and additional needs. Many of our young people may have found mainstream education difficult, so we are looking for someone who can use practical, creative workshops to help them build confidence, re-engage in learning and develop skills for their next step.
The role is not about delivering traditional classroom lessons. You will plan and deliver engaging vocational activities in areas such as music production, video editing, podcasting, photography, content creation, digital design and other media-based projects. You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas. We are looking for someone who is media literate, creative, confident using digital tools, and willing to keep learning and developing their own skills so they can best support our young people.
You will work with young people on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, adapting activities to suit different needs, confidence levels and abilities.
You will be part of a dynamic, supportive and young person-centred environment where relationships, consistency and creativity matter. The ideal candidate will have strong digital media awareness and a willingness to learn, but just as importantly, they will be patient, emotionally resilient, reliable and able to build trust with young people who may need time and encouragement to engage.
Duties
Your main duties will include:
- Planning, delivering and evaluating practical digital media workshops for young people aged 14–25.
- Delivering creative activities such as music production, video editing, podcasting, photography, content creation, digital design and media projects.
- Supporting young people on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, depending on individual need.
- Helping young people develop confidence, communication skills, social skills, employability skills and independence through creative activities.
- Supporting young people to complete projects such as tracks, short videos, podcasts, portfolios, promotional content or digital artwork.
- Teaching young people how to use relevant equipment and software safely and appropriately.
- Preparing, maintaining and organising digital media resources and equipment.
- Adapting workshops to meet young people’s needs, responses, confidence and ability levels.
- Continuing to develop your own digital media knowledge and practical skills in order to improve the workshop offer and better support young people.
- Promoting positive behaviour, inclusion, self-esteem and independence.
- Supporting young people with SEMH, SEN and additional needs using a calm, consistent and young person-centred approach.
- Recording progress, engagement and achievement as required.
- Contributing to Individual Behaviour Plans and agreed support strategies where appropriate.
- Working closely with colleagues, parents/carers and professionals involved in the young person’s support.
- Supporting the wider day-to-day running of NXT, including supervision during breaks, meetings, admin tasks and transport where required.
- Following all safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection procedures.
RequirementsEssential
- Media literate, creative and confident using digital tools, with practical skills in one or more areas such as music production, video editing, podcasting, photography, content creation, graphic design, digital storytelling or social media content.
- Willingness to learn, practise and develop your own digital media skills across a range of creative areas.
- Confidence using, or learning to use, relevant equipment, software or platforms, such as cameras, microphones, audio equipment, laptops, tablets, editing software or music production software.
- Ability to build positive relationships with young people, including those who may be disengaged from education or have experienced difficulties in previous settings.
- A calm, consistent and emotionally resilient approach.
- Good understanding of professional boundaries, safeguarding and health and safety.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good organisation skills and the ability to maintain standards.
- Ability to make creative activities accessible, engaging and achievable for young people with different needs and confidence levels.
- Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience working with young people with SEMH, SEN or additional needs.
- Previous experience in teaching, mentoring, coaching, youth work, instructing or creative facilitation.
- Experience using software such as Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton, FL Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator or similar.
- Knowledge of online safety, copyright, consent and responsible digital content creation.
- Experience supporting young people to build portfolios or complete creative projects.
- First aid training.
- Experience writing brief progress notes or contributing to reports.

Pay: £29,000.00-£32,000.00 per year
