Trainee CHC Caseworker / Legal Graduate / Caseworker

Acorn Continuing Healthcare

Salary: £25,500 basic
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (37.5 hours)
Location: Home-based in Devon
Regular training and team meetings in North Devon

Acorn Continuing Healthcare is a specialist firm supporting individuals and families with NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding assessments, reviews and appeals.

Due to continued growth, we are looking for an ambitious, confident and highly organised individual to join our team.

This is a development role combining case administration, client communication and casework, with full training and the opportunity to progress into reviewing complex cases, drafting detailed representations and advocating on behalf of clients and their families.

You do not need previous NHS Continuing Healthcare experience. We are looking for someone with the right legal or analytical background, attention to detail, communication skills and ambition to develop.

The Opportunity

Initially, you will support the day-to-day management and preparation of client cases while working closely with experienced CHC caseworkers.

You will be involved in real cases from the outset and gradually trained across the full NHS Continuing Healthcare process.

As your knowledge and experience develop, the role will progress from case administration and support into case reviewing, professional drafting and advocacy.

What You'll Be Doing

Your initial responsibilities will include:

Managing and maintaining client case files
Requesting and chasing medical, care and NHS records
Liaising with clients, NHS organisations, care homes and other professionals
Organising and preparing records for detailed case review
Reviewing documentation and identifying relevant evidence or missing information
Preparing case chronologies and evidence summaries
Speaking with prospective clients and conducting initial enquiry and triage calls
Providing regular updates to existing clients
Supporting experienced caseworkers with the review of medical and care records
Proofreading and quality-checking reports and Letters of Representations
Checking evidence within drafted representations against the underlying records
Assisting with preparation for NHS CHC assessments, reviews and appeals

As you develop, you will be trained to:

Conduct detailed reviews of medical and care records
Analyse evidence across the NHS Continuing Healthcare care domains
Assess the Nature, Intensity, Complexity and Unpredictability of an individual's needs
Understand and apply the Primary Health Need test
Develop case strategies and recommendations
Draft detailed Letters of Representations and appeal submissions
Prepare clients for assessments and appeals
Attend Multi-Disciplinary Team assessments and appeal meetings
Advocate on behalf of clients and their families

Previous NHS Continuing Healthcare experience is not required, as specialist training will be provided.

Requirements

Law degree, legal qualification or relevant legal/casework experience preferred
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word and Outlook
Full UK driving licence
Based in Devon
Able to travel to North Devon for regular training and team meetings
Willingness to travel to assessments, meetings or panels where required, although these predominantly take place remotely
Comfortable working from home and managing your own workload
Work well under pressure
A positive, proactive and can-do attitude

Working Setup

This is primarily a home-based role, and applicants can be based anywhere within Devon.

Regular face-to-face training, development sessions and team meetings will take place in North Devon.

Most client meetings, NHS assessments and appeal meetings are conducted remotely by telephone or Microsoft Teams, although occasional travel may be required.

Reasonable travel expenses incurred for required business travel, including attendance at training, meetings, assessments and appeals, will be paid by the company.

Training & Progression

This is not intended to remain an administrative position.

The successful candidate will receive ongoing training and practical experience with the intention of progressing into a specialist CHC Caseworker, Reviewer and Advocate.

As your experience develops, you will take increasing responsibility for your own cases, including conducting detailed case reviews, drafting representations and ultimately representing clients during NHS Continuing Healthcare assessments and appeals.
