At the Field Studies Council, our mission is to create outstanding opportunities that inspire everyone to engage with and care for the environment.
Every day, you’ll play a part in that mission. From school groups experiencing the outdoors for the first time to adult learners developing their knowledge and confidence, the sessions you deliver will help people build a deeper understanding of the natural world.
Make a difference
As a tutor, you will deliver engaging science and geography field trips alongside a wide range of outdoor education experiences for school groups, colleges, universities, families, and adult learners.
Your role will include planning and delivering sessions, adapting activities to suit different learners, and making sure everything you do is safe and inclusive.
You will also contribute to the development of new activities and work closely with a supportive education team to improve and grow what we offer.
When you are not delivering in the field, you will support the wider running of a busy education centre. Your weekly hours will vary across the year, with more during busy periods and fewer in quieter weeks. This is an active role, and some weeks can be busy and demanding, but it is also highly rewarding work.

Flatford Mill was our very first field study centre in the UK, where outdoor learning began, set in the heart of the Dedham Vale National Landscape. Picture starting your day beside the River Stour, surrounded by the classic English countryside that inspired John Constable. With riverside habitats, ancient woodland, lakeside margins and open grassland all within our 7-hectare grounds, the landscape becomes your living classroom. Working at Flatford Mill means teaching in a place steeped in history, creativity and natural beauty.
Who we’re looking for
- You’ll have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject and some experience of teaching or tutoring.

You’ll be confident planning sessions, preparing learning resources, and engaging a wide range of learners.

Knowledge of the National Curriculum, Geography and Biology specifications would be advantageous.
