Mechanic / Machinist – Prototype & Production Engineering

Salary: £35,000 – £45,000 DOE
Schedule: Monday to Friday
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanic / Machinist to join a fast-moving engineering team working on advanced mechanical systems, prototype equipment, tooling, and production support machinery.
This is a varied role suited to someone who enjoys solving problems, building things properly, and working across both workshop machining and mechanical assembly. You will support the development, build, testing, maintenance, and continuous improvement of specialist engineering systems including mechanical assemblies, tooling, fixtures, and prototype equipment.
The role would suit someone from a precision engineering, motorsport, aerospace, automation, manufacturing, R&D, or specialist workshop background.
Responsibilities
- Manual machining including milling, turning, drilling, tapping, grinding, and fabrication work
- Mechanical assembly and fitting of precision mechanical systems
- Building and modifying prototype equipment and tooling
- Maintenance, repair, and fault finding on workshop and production machinery
- Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and CAD-generated parts
- Supporting engineers during prototype development and testing activities
- Working with aluminium, steels, composites, plastics, and fabricated assemblies
- Assisting with jig, fixture, and bespoke tooling manufacture
- Maintaining high workshop standards including organisation, cleanliness, and safety
- Supporting low-volume production and rapid development projects
Skills & ExperienceEssential
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical workshop experience
- Experience operating manual machine tools
- Ability to read engineering drawings
- Experience using precision measuring equipment
- Good understanding of tolerances and mechanical assembly practices
- Self-motivated with a proactive attitude
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small engineering team
Desirable
- Manual/CNC machining experience
- TIG/MIG welding or fabrication experience
- Experience with prototype or R&D environments
- Automotive, motorsport, aerospace, robotics, or automation background
- Good mechanical handling skills
