Senior Operations Manager
Location: Wakefield / Warrington
Reports To: Directors
Role Overview
The Senior Operations Manager is responsible for the overall management of day-to-day operations within a busy, independent powered access rental company. This includes overseeing hire desk activity, transport logistics, fleet performance, compliance, and team management. The role requires a hands-on, proactive leader who can ensure operational efficiency, maintain high safety and service standards, and uphold industry accreditations, including IPAF Rental+.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
● Oversee the daily running of a busy hire desk, ensuring efficient handling of enquiries, bookings, and customer service. Obtain regular reports and hold meetings with the Hire desk Manager.
● Manage the scheduling of deliveries and collections across a fleet of approximately 70 powered access machines.
● Coordinate transport operations involving drivers, pickups, and trailers to ensure timely and efficient service.
● Ensure high fleet utilisation while minimising downtime.
Fleet & Maintenance Management
● Maintain accurate records of all fleet maintenance, inspections, and servicing.
● Ensure all machines are compliant with relevant legislation and industry standards.
● Manage and monitor tachograph downloads and ensure compliance with driver regulations.
● Coordinate and arrange rapid breakdown response to customer sites, minimising disruption.
● Work closely with maintenance providers or in-house engineers to ensure fleet reliability and performance.
Health & Safety Compliance
● Take full responsibility for health and safety across all areas of the operation.
● Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, safe systems of work, and industry best practice.
● Conduct and review risk assessments and implement necessary improvements.
● Promote and maintain a strong safety culture throughout the business.
Accreditation & Standards
● Maintain and uphold IPAF Rental+ accreditation standards.
● Ensure all processes, documentation, and operational practices meet accreditation requirements.
● Lead audit preparation and ensure ongoing compliance and continuous improvement.
Team Leadership & HR Responsibilities
● Lead, manage, and develop staff across operations, including hire desk and drivers.
● Take responsibility for staff welfare, engagement, and development.
● Conduct regular performance reviews and appraisals.
● Identify training needs and support ongoing professional development.
● Work alongside external HR consultants or advisors to ensure compliance with employment legislation and best practice.
● Regular communication with Directors and deliver monthly reports on all operations.
● Address performance issues, disciplinary matters, and employee relations in a professional and consistent manner.
Process Improvement & Performance
● Monitor operational performance and implement improvements to increase efficiency and service quality.
● Develop and maintain systems and procedures to support business growth.
● Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Skills & Experience
● Proven experience in an operations management or senior leadership role, ideally within powered access, plant hire, or a related industry.
● Strong knowledge of fleet management, logistics, and hire desk operations.
● Understanding of health and safety regulations and compliance requirements.
● Experience with IPAF Rental+ accreditation (desirable).
● Knowledge of tachograph regulations and transport compliance (desirable).
● Strong leadership, organisational, and decision-making skills.
