The Role
As a Higher-Level Learning Support Practitioner, you will join our small team working with young adults on our educational programme.
A significant part of this role will involve working directly with learners with profound and multiple learning disabilities. This will include providing high levels of individualised support to help learners access learning, communication, personal care, regulation, routines, sensory activities, community-based learning and wider opportunities for independence.
You will support learners with complex needs, including those who may have physical, sensory, communication, medical, personal care and emotional regulation needs. You will be expected to work in a highly practical, patient and responsive way, adapting support to each learner’s needs, communication style, ability and support plan.
You will support individual learners and small groups to achieve their learning goals and develop independent life, social, communication and employability skills. This may include supporting learners with English, Maths and IT skills, vocational studies, enrichment activities, community-based learning and work experience placements.
You will provide practical, sensitive and respectful support with personal care and personal hygiene where needed, while promoting dignity, independence, choice and safeguarding at all times.
A key part of the role will be supporting learners using person-centred, trauma-informed and positive approaches. You will contribute to the use of Positive Behaviour Support strategies, help learners to regulate, support de-escalation and follow agreed support plans and risk assessments. Where required, you will use breakaway training and agreed safety procedures to keep learners, staff and others safe.
You will also support other learners aged 16 to 24 with a wide range of needs. This may include learners with special educational needs and disabilities, communication needs, social anxiety, emotional difficulties, behaviour support needs, trauma-related needs and social, emotional and mental health needs.
You will work closely with tutors, managers, support staff, families, external professionals and wider partners to ensure learners receive the right support at the right time. You will be actively and regularly involved in reviewing learner support plans, taking into account the learner’s progress, changing needs, ambitions and aspirations.
You will help learners develop independent study skills, communication strategies, confidence, resilience and practical skills for adulthood. You will also support the learner journey through classroom-based and administrative tasks, including recording progress, contributing to evidence for portfolios, supporting attendance and engagement, and helping to maintain a safe, calm and inclusive learning environment.
