Purpose
Carry out multiple functions across the port estate and at sea in support of the ports marine and operational functions.
Scope
Carry out duties to provide and deliver a professional marine function for the port, maintain the port estate, operate and maintain plant and equipment. Ensure the port meets safety, environmental and security responsibilities.
Accountabilities
- Port Marine Safety Code-An understanding of the Code.
- Compliance with Safety Management System and company Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Operate and maintain marine craft.
- Inspection and maintenance of aids to navigation.
- Infrastructure inspections / organise / record maintenance/preventative maintenance etc.
- Undertake training as required and assist with familiarisation of new staff.
- Organise/carry out general maintenance and housekeeping around the port.
- Assist with organising/participating in drills/exercises.
- Mooring and unmooring of vessels.
- Assist with Oil spill Response incidents/ training/exercises. Ensure equipment is in good condition and ready to deploy at all times. (Training to MCA 2P required).
- Assist/provide cover for other marine staff on operational requirements.
- Assist HM/AHM with internal/external Audits/inspections i.e. PMSC compliance etc.
Skills, experiences, qualifications and competencies
Essential
- Marine background or knowledge of the Marine function at a port.
- To cover working unsociable hours, weekends and bank holidays (rostered out of hours cover).
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work/manage within tight schedules at times.
- Knowledge of mandatory, regulatory and safety responsibilities relevant to the main duties.
- A flexible and committed approach to working within a small team that strives to provide a high-quality port and marine service.
- Have desire to work in the port industry, highly motivated and a willingness to motivate others.
- Physical fitness to perform duties.
- Willingness to achieve security clearance to DBS and potentially CTC, failure to obtain will result in dismissal.
Ideal
- RYA/MCA qualifications with commercial endorsements.
- Knowledge/experience of port operations.
- Completed a Marine apprenticeship.
- Short-Range VHF Radio certificate.
- Experience with boat handling.
- Forklift truck / Telehandler / Bulldozer / Material Handler operator licenses. (Desirable)
- Banksman/slinger certification.
- Oil response Training (MCA 2P desirable).
- Confined space level 1 / 2.
