IMS Epidemiology is seeking to appoint an Academic Support Coordinator to provide administrative, organisational and research support to the Professor of Public Health Research.
The postholder will help the Professor manage communications, documents, information, meetings and workflows, supporting the sustainable delivery of their academic, research, supervisory and strategic responsibilities.
IMS Epidemiology is a Division within the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, situated within the Institute of Metabolic Science on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Its mission is to inform, develop and evaluate approaches to promote health and wellbeing through the joint strategies of precision prevention and population health improvement. This position is based in the Population Health Interventions group, an interdisciplinary team combining epidemiological, public health and social science approaches to understanding how environmental and policy changes can improve diet, physical activity and population health.
The successful candidate will provide practical coordination and support across a varied portfolio of academic and professional activities. This will include coordinating meetings and schedules; planning and managing workflows; preparing agendas, minutes, briefing notes and follow-up actions; triaging and batching correspondence; organising travel and related arrangements; maintaining filing and document management systems; supporting expenditure, purchasing and reimbursement processes; and coordinating, preparing and formatting documents and presentation materials for publications, grant applications, lectures, briefings and other professional outputs.
The role will also involve preliminary research using a range of information sources, including searching for and collating scientific literature and related material. The postholder will be expected to work confidently with academic papers, committee papers, grant-related documents, correspondence and presentation materials, helping to maintain continuity across complex workflows.
We are looking for someone with previous high-level experience of executive assistance, personal assistance, project coordination or research coordination, ideally in higher education or another research setting. You will have excellent organisational and planning skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to handle detailed information carefully and methodically. You will be highly competent in Microsoft 365, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, and competent in using reference management software.
You will be comfortable working both independently and closely with the Professor, who will provide direction, priorities, substantive content and feedback. This is an enabling support role: all academic, research, supervisory and strategic responsibilities will remain with the Professor. It would suit someone who has an understanding of public health research and the rhythms and expectations of academic work, and takes satisfaction in bringing structure, continuity and follow-through to making complex professional activity run smoothly.
This is a Grade 5 post funded for 20 hours per week through the UK Government's Access to Work scheme. The post is available for twelve months in the first instance, with potential for extension to three years in total subject to the continuing availability of Access to Work funding.
