We are looking for an individual to fill this replacement post within the Cellular Pathology Department at St James’s University Hospital.
This is a full time consultant post within the Pathology Clinical Support Unit to support the provision of GI pathology services to The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the region. There is also the opportunity to do some specialist Liver pathology as part of this post.
The GI pathology service currently comprises 10 substantive consultants working variable amounts of time dedicated to GI work. As many of the services operate at a regional or national referral level, there is a broad and interesting workload ranging from complex endoscopic polyp resections to multi-visceral pelvic exenteration surgery. The service supports three MDTs, which include regional services for advanced colorectal, anal and upper GI cancers and a gastroenterology clinicopathological correlation meeting.
Leeds is the regional tertiary unit for liver surgery and one of the larger liver transplant units in the UK, delivering both adult and paediatric transplants. Liver pathology in Leeds comprises an interesting mix of medical (native and transplant) and tumour pathology, including both biopsy work and resections. There are currently four liver pathologists equivilant to two WTE. They work closely with hepatology colleagues in providing an acute urgent biopsy service alongside more routine reporting, with regular discussion of cases in a weekly clinicopathological meeting. They also support and present cases in the weekly hepatobiliary cancer MDT.
LTHT hosts the West Yorkshire Cellular Pathology Genomic Centre and the central laboratory for the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory hub with access to state of the art genomic testing, IHC and FISH. This helps deliver a cutting edge GI and Liver molecular pathology service for our patients in Leeds and across the region. There are strong academic links with the GI Pathology group at the University of Leeds, which leads a GI cancer theme in the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre jointly hosted by the Trust and University. There are multiple opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate pathology teaching. The laboratory scans all histology slides and there is the opportunity for digital home working for part of the time in accordance with Departmental guidelines.
The successful applicant should possess FRCPath (or equivalent). They should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.
