About the Role

We are looking for a caring, patient, and proactive Support Worker to join our dedicated team, supporting children and young people with additional needs in the community and at home.

You will work with children and young people who may be non-verbal, have learning disabilities, or present with challenging behaviours, supporting them to take part in meaningful activities, develop independence, and build confidence.

This role also involves working closely with families - balancing expectations, providing reassurance, and promoting positive relationships to achieve the best outcomes for each child.

Role Purpose

To provide individualised, person-centred support to children and young people with complex needs - focusing on positive behaviour support, independence, and participation in community-based activities that enhance their social, emotional, and physical well-being.

Key Responsibilities

Support children and young people in community-based activities such as swimming, walks, creative arts, sports, and social outings.
Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies and de-escalation techniques in line with individual behaviour plans.
Encourage and promote independence, teaching daily living skills and decision-making through structured and creative approaches.
Communicate effectively with non-verbal individuals using alternative communication methods (e.g., PECS, Makaton, E-tran, or communication books).
Support with personal care and mobility where required, maintaining dignity and respect at all times.
Build trusting and supportive relationships with both children and their families.
Manage family expectations with professionalism and empathy, ensuring consistent communication and shared goals.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date support plans, risk assessments, and behaviour records.
Encourage and model positive social interactions and emotional regulation.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, families, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure consistent, high-quality care and support.
Ensure all safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety procedures are followed at all times.

Essential Skills and Qualities

Compassionate, patient, and calm under pressure.
Experience working with children or young people with learning disabilities or complex needs.
Understanding of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and challenging behaviour management.
Excellent communication skills - verbal, non-verbal, and written.
Ability to build trust and strong relationships with families and professionals.
Reliable, adaptable, and committed to promoting the well-being and independence of others.
Creative, proactive, and motivated to encourage engagement in activities.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care / Children & Young People’s Workforce (or equivalent).
Experience working with non-verbal communication systems (PECS, Makaton, E-tran, etc.).
Training or experience in Positive Behaviour Support and de-escalation.
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to community settings.
