About the Role
Sturts Community Trust is seeking a reliable and practical Maintenance Operative to support the upkeep and maintenance of our residential homes within our farm and land-based community.
This is a varied hands-on role suited to an experienced and adaptable individual who enjoys carrying out general maintenance and repair work while working within a supportive community environment. The successful candidate will work alongside charity support workers and adults with varying support needs, helping to maintain safe, welcoming, and functional home environments.
Tools, workshop facilities, and access to a work van will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
The Maintenance Operative will be responsible for carrying out a range of general maintenance duties, including:
- Fitting shelves, curtain rails, notice boards, and wall-mounted fixtures.
- Hanging pictures, signs, and other items safely and securely.
- Replacing light bulbs and carrying out basic non-specialist electrical maintenance within competence.
- Basic decorating and painting work.
- Minor repairs to furniture, fixtures, fittings.
- General carpentry and practical repair tasks.
- Supporting the upkeep of residential and commercial buildings.
- Identifying maintenance issues and reporting larger repairs requiring specialist contractors.
- Maintaining tools, workshop equipment, and work areas in a safe and organised manner.
- Supporting site improvement projects as required.
Health, Safety and Safeguarding
The postholder will:
- Follow all Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Undertake and contribute to risk assessments where appropriate.
- Work safely within live environments occupied by residents, staff, visitors, and vulnerable adults.
- Maintain awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and professional boundaries.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are completed safely and with minimal disruption to site users.
- Use tools and equipment responsibly and in accordance with manufacturer guidance.
Person Specification
Essential
- Previous experience in general maintenance, property maintenance, facilities, caretaking, or a similar trade-based role.
- Practical skills across a range of maintenance disciplines.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Good understanding of safe working practices.
- Experience of working from risk assessments and method statements.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and professional approach.
Desirable
- Experience working within care, education, charity, community, or supported living environments.
- Basic qualifications in a relevant trade.
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles.
- Experience working alongside people with additional support needs.

Salary
£13.00–£17.00 per hour, depending on experience and trade background.
