Job Description:
Salary Range: £53,000 - £71,000
Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with broad bands. The salary range shown reflects the approved grade band for this role, or a narrower hiring range published within that band, and is benchmarked against the external market. Exceptions above the standard range are managed through governance controls to protect internal equity.
Your Impact
At Leonardo UK, you’ll help shape and strengthen the organisation’s data capabilities by building scalable, reliable, and future-ready data solutions that enable informed decision-making across the business. As a Data Engineer, you’ll work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment where innovation, automation, and data integrity are central to success.
In this role, you will:
-
Design, develop, and maintain robust ETL/ELT pipelines to support the ingestion, transformation, validation, and delivery of data across multiple systems and platforms.
-
Manage and optimise enterprise data environments, including cloud-based data warehouses and data lakes such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, and Azure Synapse, ensuring high levels of scalability, reliability, and performance.
-
Collaborate closely with Data Science, Business Intelligence, and Engineering teams to ensure data is accurate, accessible, and aligned to business objectives.
-
Partner with stakeholders across the organisation to gather reporting and analytics requirements, translating business needs into effective and sustainable data solutions.
-
Automate data integration, orchestration, and monitoring workflows using modern tools and frameworks including Python, Dagster, and Azure Data Factory.
-
Support the development and optimisation of dashboards and reporting solutions across platforms such as Power BI, Tableau, and Looker, helping to ensure semantic consistency and trusted reporting outputs.
-
Maintain high-quality documentation and governance standards to ensure traceability, reproducibility, and compliance across data assets, pipelines, and processes.
-
Continuously identify opportunities to improve data architecture, operational efficiency, and engineering best practices across the wider data ecosystem.
This is an opportunity to work with modern technologies on meaningful, high-impact projects, helping drive the evolution of data engineering within one of the UK’s leading advanced technology organisations.
What you'll bring
Technical expertise: Strong knowledge of SQL, ETL/ELT processes, data warehousing, and modern data platforms. Experience with Python, Dagster, Azure Data Factory, and Azure SQL is essential; familiarity with big data technologies (e.g. Hadoop, Spark) is advantageous.
Analytical thinking: Ability to interpret complex datasets and support the development of meaningful, insight-driven BI solutions.
Problem solving: Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex data integration and data quality challenges.
Communication: Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear business language.
Attention to detail: High level of accuracy in validating data and ensuring integrity across systems.
Documentation & governance: Commitment to maintaining clear, structured documentation to support traceability and best practice.
Experience in data engineering, data management, or a related field, with hands-on expertise in data integration and pipeline development.
Certifications (desirable): Industry-recognised certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Data Engineer Associate or equivalent.
This is not an exhaustive list, and we are keen to hear from you even if you might not have experience in all the above. The most important skill is a good attitude and willingness to learn.
