Role Summary
We are recruiting Autonomous Vehicle Safety Officers to act as the human safety layer across a range of autonomous vehicle operations, including in-vehicle supervision, remote monitoring and on-road support.
This is a safety critical role requiring high levels of situational awareness, disciplined decision making and sound judgement under pressure. You will be responsible for assessing risk in real time, determining when intervention is required and ensuring safe, compliant operation at all times.
The role operates across multiple environments, including:
- In-vehicle safety operation
- Remote cockpit monitoring
- Ground support and escort operations
Success in this role is defined not just by safe execution, but by the quality of decision-making, consistency of judgement and contribution to continuous operational improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Core Safety Accountability
- Act as the in-vehicle safety driver for autonomous vehicles on UK public roads, responsible for safe operation at all times
- Continuously assess vehicle behavior, environmental conditions and system performance in real time
- Intervene where required to ensure the safety of passengers, the public and the vehicle.
- Apply consistent judgement on when to intervene versus when to allow system operation, in line with defined safety thresholds.
Ground Support & Fleet Operations
- Collaborate with other in-vehicle operators to create a coordinated safety layer across the fleet.
- Support safe navigation, route management and incident prevention during live operations.
Risk Management & Incident Handling
- Take ownership of initial on-scene response to safety incidents, ensuring safe, compliant and controlled resolution
- Preserve evidence, manage the environment and communicate effectively with passengers and stakeholders.
- Escalate incidents in a structured and timely manner in line with operational protocols.
Data, Insight & Continuous Improvement
- Accurately record operational data, anomalies and system behaviors
- Provide structured feedback to technical and operational teams to support system and process improvement.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of SOPs, training frameworks and safety processes.
Compliance & Representation
- Maintain full compliance with the UK Highway Code, TfL PHV regulations and internal safety standards.
- Represent AV Operations professionally with regulators, partners and customers.
- Support training, audits and operational readiness activities as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Full UK driving licence (clean) with 3+ years driving experience.
- Strong hazard perception and a demonstrable safety first mindset
- Must be comfortable navigating a Left Hand drive vehicle.
- Proven ability to make calm, structured decisions under pressure.
- Confident communicator with the ability to report clearly and concisely.
- Basic technical literacy with the ability to understand system behavior and translate observations into actionable insight
- Flexibility to work variable shifts aligned to operational requirements.
Desirable
- Advanced driving qualifications
- Experience in vehicle testing, safety operations or fleet environments
- Familiarity with London road networks and operating conditions
- Experience working with telematics, camera systems or operational data.
- Valid PHV licence (TfL or relevant regional authority)
