Job description

The role provides an opportunity to work on some of the most important long-term macroeconomic issues facing the UK to influence better policy outcomes for households and businesses. The post-holder will contribute to work across the branch and HMTs analytical community, ensuring evidence influences policymaking.

Exact responsibilities will vary according to policy and economic priorities, but the post-holder can expect to manage, deliver and communicate economic analysis to support policy development, while building expertise in macroeconomic modelling, with training and support provided.

Core responsibilities in the role include:

Lead analytical projects on longer-term and structural issues facing the UK economy, responding to economic and policy priorities through managing and delivering impactful analysis and advice.
Lead on application and development of HM Treasurys overlapping generations model (UK OLG) across a range of policy issues. UK OLG is a recent addition to the teams modelling toolkit, and is used for the analysis of the impact of shocks, trends and policies on the UK macroeconomy in the long term. It provides a framework for general equilibrium analysis which reflects the way households change their behaviour over their lifecycle. The post-holder is likely to also have opportunities to work across the branchs suite of macroeconomic models, including Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling.
Build expertise on climate macroeconomics through conducting qualitative and quantitate analysis. While the post-holder can expect to work flexibly, applying their analytical skills across a range of structural issues facing the UK economy, climate is likely to remain an ongoing focus of the branchs work.
Communicate economic analysis effectively across the department and government, including contributing to presentations and written advice for senior leaders.
Build and maintain collaborative relationships across the department, government and externally. Work closely with analytical and policy colleagues in the department to ensure analysis influences policy development, and work across government and with external stakeholders to deliver HMTs strategic priorities.
Support Economics Groups corporate agenda, promoting the Groups wider objectives and making it an excellent place to work.

A postgraduate degree in economics or experience in applying econometric analysis and quantitative modelling, would be advantageous.

Reserve Lists

Everyone working with government assets must complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks. Additionally, successful candidates will be subject to National Security Vetting. The level of security vetting required for this role is Counter-Terrorist Check.

To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out, applicants will need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 out of the past 5 years. You will be asked to provide residency information within your application form, and eligibility for national security vetting will be checked once the advert closing date has passed.
