Role Overview
The Pattern Cutter will work closely with the Creative Director, design team, and studio tailors to translate design concepts into technically precise patterns and production-ready garments.
The role requires strong expertise in luxury garment construction, including toile development, draping, and pattern cutting across a range of fabrics. The successful candidate will play a key role in the sampling process, supporting fittings and refining patterns to ensure the highest standards of fit, quality, and craftsmanship. There will be some potential for travel.
Key Responsibilities
Pattern Cutting & Technical Development
- Create first patterns from design sketches, technical drawings, or reference garments
- Develop patterns for womenswear including, but not limited to, dresses, kaftans, occasionwear, swimwear, lingerie, structured garments and more
- Translate creative concepts into technically-viable patterns suitable for sampling and production
- Work using both manual pattern cutting and digital pattern-making tools where required
- Ensure patterns reflect the intended silhouette, proportion, and construction of the design
- Review patterns and technical documentation from previous collections to ensure accuracy and consistency across the pattern archive
- Identify and implement necessary corrections or refinements to existing patterns and technical files to support future production and re-orders
Toile Development & Draping
- Develop and construct toiles to test design, structure, and fit
- Work directly on the stand through draping and moulage techniques where required
- Refine patterns through toile iterations in collaboration with the designer
- Advise on garment engineering and construction methods during development
Sampling & Fit Sessions
- Collaborate with studio tailors during the sampling process
- Prepare patterns and instructions for sample development
- Attend fit sessions with designer and make necessary pattern adjustments
- Refine patterns to ensure consistency of fit across sizes and styles
Production Readiness & Factory Liaison
- Prepare final production patterns and technical documentation for manufacturers
- Work with production teams and overseas factories to ensure accurate pattern execution
- Support the development of size grading and size sets
- Troubleshoot technical issues during sampling and pre-production stages
- Ensure patterns are production-ready and aligned with manufacturing capabilities
Technical Documentation & Pattern Library
- Produce clear pattern packs including measurements, seam allowances, and construction notes
- Maintain organised archives of patterns and technical documentation
- Ensure version control and accurate record-keeping across collections
Quality & Craftsmanship
- Ensure garments maintain Torlowei’s standards of luxury construction and finish
- Advise on fabric behaviour, garment structure, and finishing techniques
- Support the design team in preserving the integrity of the original design vision through technical development
Experience & Profile
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a Pattern Cutter within luxury, premium, or designer womenswear
- Proven experience working within a fashion studio or atelier environment
- Strong expertise in toiling, draping, and flat pattern cutting
- Deep understanding of garment construction, fit, and luxury finishing techniques
- Experience working with luxury fabrics such as silk, lace, crepe, organza, and structured textiles
- Experience preparing patterns for overseas production and factory manufacturing
- Experience in lingerie or intimate apparel pattern cutting would be highly desirable
- Familiarity with digital pattern cutting software such as Gerber, Lectra, or CLO is advantageous
