Ideal Candidate:
You should be a passionate and dedicated midwife with a strong commitment to midwife-led care, excellent communication skills, and a desire to create positive birth experiences for women. Your ability to work collaboratively in a supportive team environment is essential to thriving in this role.
As a Band 6 Midwife, within our esteemed midwife-led team, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality, individualised care to expectant women, birthing people and their families throughout their pregnancy, labour, and postpartum journey.
Our focus on a continuity of care model enables you to foster meaningful relationships with the women you support, ensuring a positive and empowering birth experience with reduced risk of intervention. This position allows for a commitment to physiological birth practices without the demands of on-call duties, providing flexibility in your work schedule.
You will collaborate closely with our outstanding obstetric consultants and wider MDT to ensure the highest standard of safe, gold-standard care for our patients.

Professional
- Maintain and develop up-to-date evidence based professional knowledge and competence in accordance with NMC legislation and recommendations. Promote and role model positive professional behaviour.
- To abide by the NMC Midwives Rules and Standards (2012). As a Registered Midwife, you are personally accountable for development of your practice.
- Maintain and develop high standards of research-based midwifery care.
- Implement Trust policies and protocols utilising significant discretion to work within a set of defined parameters and ensure that all care is carried out within the agreed standard and policy. Participate in up-dating and revising of policies and guidelines as appropriate.
- Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with hospital and community midwifery based staff as well as other professional groups. Liaise effectively with the Professional Midwifery Advocates and demonstrate an understanding of their role.
- Have awareness of the pressure and workload on professional colleagues and manage the existing resources as required on a daily basis.
- Actively promoting the implementation of service developments and quality initiatives to enhance service provision.
- The post holder is aware and identifies concerns relating to child protection (Children’s Act, 1989) liaising with the Named Midwife for Child Protection and the multidisciplinary team.
- To show regard and respect for different ethnic, cultural and religious beliefs within the provision of all aspects of midwifery care.
- Show an awareness and understanding of vulnerable adults at risk and the processes and support mechanisms available. This midwife will seek advice from the senior midwife in all instances.
Clinical
- Act as an autonomous practitioner in all areas of normal midwifery practice as guided by the Midwives Rules and Standards (2012). This role encompasses the care given during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period.
- Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the total care to women/mothers and babies throughout their pregnancy and birth journey
- Act as a role model providing preceptorship for newly qualified midwives.
- Give advice, care and support to women and birthing people autonomously through regular antenatal clinics.
- Maintain competence in, manage and co-ordinate emergency procedures which require knowledge and expertise whilst awaiting medical assistance.
- Record and report all adverse clinical risks utilising the appropriate incident reporting system and forms.
- Assume responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with the Trust policies and statutory rules/ guidelines.
- Identify areas for research, audit and development. Initiate and participate in research and clinical audit programmes. Encourage and motivate other midwives to participate in audit and research. Encourage and develop new approaches to practice.
- Ensure relevant research findings are integrated into the practices and policies. Encourage and take an active role in the evaluation of new approaches to practice.
- Work with social workers and the primary health care team, formatting reports or attending Social Services Case Conferences as a delegated responsibility of the senior case holding midwife in conjunction with the vulnerable women’s lead midwife.
Education
- Participate in the setting, maintaining and reviewing of standards of midwifery practice. Participate in the teaching and orientation of learners and new members of staff.
- To provide the effective mentoring/associate mentoring and assessment of student midwives and ensure that appropriate records and reports on student progress are available to the relevant University.
- Disseminate professional and clinical knowledge to colleagues. Encourage and develop innovation in practice.
- Ensure that appropriate health education is provided for women and their families making full use of available resources. Introducing new developments and practices as necessary.
- Participate in Trust mandatory training programmes, including MOMS.
- Play an active role in the planning and provision of parent education and information programmes.
Legal
- Observe Midwives’ Rules and Standards (2012) as dictated by the NMC.
- Ensure working conditions are safe, in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act. Be aware of and abide by local infection control policies and procedures.
- Attend annual core and mandatory training.
- Maintain contemporaneous and concise records with due regard to maintaining client confidentiality.
Management
- Promote effective personal management of time and resources to provide a safe midwifery service. Refer to the senior midwife or midwifery manager for support in the work place.
- To be aware of the financial resources in the defined clinical area.
- Support the investigation of complaints as required. Take verbal complaints and diffuse complaints wherever possible.
- Facilitate the smooth running of the designated clinical area on a daily basis.
- Adhere to the Health and Safety legislation, in particular, COSHH regulations and advise other levels of staff.
- Maintain stores and make recommendations for the procurement of equipment; ensure proper economic use is made of them.
- Regularly attend unit meetings, professional updates and study days.
