Who we are

We are a small firm of Architects based in Dedham, near Colchester. Our practice specialises in new buildings and conservation of historic buildings with many completed projects in the UK and abroad. The diverse portfolio includes new houses, alterations and extensions, furniture, gardens, follies, pools, agricultural buildings and cart lodges.

Rodney Black Design Studios has won numerous awards, including those from the RIBA, awards for craftsmanship and international superyacht awards.

The practice has also recently established a publishing house, RBDS Publications, and a gallery currently exhibiting paintings by Rodney Black and Philippa Dow.

The Role

We are looking for an Architectural Technician/Technologist to join our growing team.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the architect to develop general arrangement drawings and technical designs.
Prepare detailed drawings and specifications (primarily for private domestic projects) using CAD software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SketchUp.
Help to evaluate materials, construction methods, and technologies to ensure suitability and compliance with regulations.
Assist with site inspections and coordinate with construction team to ensure projects are executed according to design specifications.

The ideal Candidate will have:

Proficiency in CAD and other architectural design software.
3+ years of experience in similar role.
an interest in traditional and modern building methods.
Good attention to detail.
Self-motivation and enthusiasm.
Good communication and presentation skills.

Please note that our office is based in a rural location with limited access to public transport. Applicants must be based locally or have access to a vehicle. The position is permanent with a 3-month probation period and a second review before six months. 20 days holiday pro rata + bank holidays. Salary is negotiable. Role cannot be carried out remotely.
