Full job description

Learning Disability Skills Specialist Permanent p/t

22.5 hrs/week
£15,166.27(£12.96/hr) (Spinal Point 2)
Start date: on completion of two professional references, qualifications/background checks and an enhanced DBS Adult Services
Location: NE46 4SA

Journey’s Learning Disability Specialists plan and deliver sessions which develop the employability and independent living skills of adults with intellectual (learning) disability. You need to be confident in coaching and leading adults, and passionate about providing opportunities which open doors, challenge barriers and enable adults with intellectual disability to lead as fulfilling lives as possible. This includes working lives.

Working with groups of 8 - 10 adults, Clients' sessions are taught both on and off site, often working with our Work Coaches, coaches or professionals from other organisations we have commissioned. You may also be joined by volunteers or University Students on practice-based placements for undergraduate and graduate degree courses.

These posts are not suitable for applicants from domiciliary, residential or nursing care backgrounds because we do not offer any personal care services.

The Charity has sites in Acomb and Blyth (Northumberland), Coundon (County Durham) and Newcastle upon Tyne and 160 adults in service currently.

All Staff are required to be fully mobile, able to travel to any of our sites for training, working collaboratively and cover, when required. All Staff working with Clients are also required to drive our minibuses. Disabled applicants who have an Access to Work travel package should be supported for this requirement.

Qualifications

NVQ2 or 3 in Health & Social Care or Experienced graduate with QTS for upper secondary SEND practice/FE SEND
A good pass at GCSE in English and Maths
Recent Safeguarding Adults training
Any additional training in learning disability, alternative forms of communication or Positive Behaviour Support is an asset.

NVQ 2 or 3 Health & Social Care or willingness to work towards - essential
Current UK driving licence and access to suitable transportation for the role (or Access to Work within work transport package) - essential
Experience or knowledge of working with vulnerable adults - desirable
Good knowledge of local services and facilities which could benefit people with learning disability - desirable
Confident IT skills i.e. Windows, Microsoft 365 (email, Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, Yammer, Teams) and Adobe, web Chat Forums, Video Conference Calling (FaceTime, Zoom and MS Teams), social media (Facebook and Instagram) or willingness to train in these packages - desirable
Disability-specialist training e.g. positive behaviour support, person-centred practice, autism awareness, Makaton, BSL - desirable
D1 minibus licence & MiDAS or willingness to work towards - desirable
