Angus Carers Centre is a rights-based charity working with and for unpaid carers across Angus. Since 1996, Angus Carers Centre has grown substantially and supports nearly 2,000 unpaid adult and young carers throughout the county. With the help of our talented and passionate team of 23 staff and volunteers, we are able to meet the needs of our carers. With the help of our volunteers, we strive to provide a first-class service to carers and their families.
Job Specifics
Working as part of the Young Carer Team, the role of a Young Adult Carer worker will offer exciting, diverse opportunities. This role is to build positive relationships with Young Adult Carers to enable them to manage their caring role and offer a period of respite. The role will require working with young adult carers in various settings in Angus as well as offering respite opportunities out with their caring role. To do this, you will provide one to one and group support to build resilience and trust with Young Adult Carers. The successful candidate will work closely with both Young and Adult Carer Teams to facilitate appropriate support to Young Adult Carers throughout Angus. You may be required to transport Young Carers to offsite activities, and therefore a full driving licence and access to a car is required.

The postholder will report to the Young Carers Service Manager and will work with the Young Carer Workers (Secondary School) during transitional periods to support 16-18 yr olds while also working with partner organisations to close the gap in provisions for 18-25 yr olds.
- Create a safe environment for unpaid carers to build genuine relationships to participate in meaningful and engaging activities allowing them to express themselves, share their dreams and aspirations,
- Identify unpaid carers’ needs, circumstances, and outcomes, and support them to achieve them by working collaboratively with colleagues, partners organisations and agencies,
- Support unpaid carers to access to a range of advice, advocacy, information, and support enabling them to make informed decisions, identify and realise their goals and lead independent, fulfilling lives,
- Create and deliver a range of individual and group activities to increase unpaid carers’ resilience, confidence, and social connections.
- Identify, reach out to, and build relationships with young adult carers (typically aged 16–25) within the community.
- Develop and sustain strategic partnerships with local authorities, health services, education providers, and voluntary organisations to strengthen the identification, referral, and support pathways for young adult carers.
- Build, manage, and enhance relationships across a diverse network of public, private, and Third Sector stakeholders, including schools, colleges, universities, community organisations, and health and social care providers, to increase awareness and improve coordinated support for young adult carers.
- Ensure unpaid carers’ voices and opinions are heard and taken into account in decision-making processes,
- Work collaboratively with Angus Carers Centre’s teams to achieve its vision and strategic objectives,
- Support unpaid carers to understand and exercise their rights by developing their sense of agency, independence, and efficacy,
- Carry out reviews and evaluations to ensure access to appropriate and timely supports is available.
- Identify and develop new opportunities for participation of carers in the delivery and shaping of services,
- Continuously learn, reflect, and improve what we do to ensure evaluation is embedded into practice, and reflects agreed outcomes,
- Assist the Education Development Worker to raise the profile of Angus Carers Centre by facilitating information and development sessions with a wide range of organisations, communities, and individuals.

Qualifications and knowledge:
- Good standard of education or qualification (or working towards) in health, youth work, social care, or relevant experience of building supportive relationships,
- Understanding of the UNCRC, Adult Care legislation and Children’s Rights and the needs of diverse individuals and communities,
- Full Driving License and a suitable vehicle for work with business insurance,
Experience

- Partnership working with private, public and Third sector organisations, including schools, health and care providers,
- Supporting people to facilitate personal, social and educational growth,
- Delivering youth-based and group activities aimed at improving confidence and self-esteem,

Knowledge, Skills and Ability
- Knowledge of issues affecting young and adult carers, legislation and policy landscape related to carers,
- Ability to build positive relationships with a wide range of individuals and agencies,
- Knowledge of SHANARRI, adult and child protection frameworks and procedures,
- Good level of IT literacy, such as MS Office and online tools and Apps,
- Strong social and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people at all levels,
Working hours
21 hours per week subject to organisational needs. Work may have to be undertaken outside office hours, including evenings and weekends.
Special conditions
The post entails work with vulnerable people and falls within the definition of “regulated work” under the provision of the Protection of Vulnerable groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The post holder will require to be registered as a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups Scheme, which will involve a Disclosure Scotland check.
